uh the worst sometimes killing rats

Okay so sometimes when I can tell my snake has been startled by rats approaching it I have helped the snake by swinging the rats head into a wall to stun it or retard it so that the snake does not feel so afraid. I have though ended up hurting rats that it still would not eat and the other night ended up with the worst story ever. After bopping it on the head it was pretty much on a gruesome route to dead and so I decided to speed it up by doing what had been suggested by placeing something behind it's neck and pulling it's tail. I think I may have done it wrong and ended up with a rat gargling on it's own blood but still not dead. It was so sad and I felt like :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:. I eventually stuffed it into a plastic bag to suffocate it. So to prevent that from happening again I would like some suggestions on how to kill a rat humanely and how to freeze them. Does anyone have any methods they could share on this.

I used to stun my mice before feeding and I actually tried the tail pulling method thinking it would be more humane and quicker than hitting them on the head but it had the same results that you described. The most humane method to euthanize a rat (or any rodent for that matter) is by CO2 gas. You can find instructions for making a simple euthananization chamber here.
