Feeding Day

Well Furio's feeding day is Thursday. He didn't eat last Thursday because I'd just got him home 2 days before. I was wondering though. I know alot of people say to not handle them but will it make him more nervous come feeding day when I move him if he hasn't been handled much?

Why do you need to move him for feeding?

Moving him to a tub so he doesn't ingest the bedding or associate food with my hand.

Hi,

You could try putting the food on something like a paper towel or piece of slate ( I had one in each tank for exactly that when I used bedding where that was possible).

Once they get into a routine I never really had any problems with them mistaking me for food unless I made a mistake.

I do have one that will not eat in her enclosure after being fed that way though - soon as she is moved to the feeder tank it is like someone threw a switch.

Unless the snake is already accustomed to being moved before being fed, you will probably hinder is feeding success by moving him. You could put the prey item on a paper towel or something of that sort like dr del suggested, or if it is live prey, there's no real reason to do anything. Even if your snake does injest a piece of bedding, it shouldn't be enough to harm him. Their digestive systems are made to break down fur and bone; they are able to handle some wood shavings.

Yeah, he'd been moved before when he was fed at the breeders so I'd like to keep him eating in a separate tub. I was just wondering if I should start handling him more so he's used to it.

I would suggest not handling him until your ready to feed him. If the breeder was feeding him in a different container then I bet he is used to being picked up. I know its hard to not handle them when its your first bp, but if you want the best for your snake thats what you gotta do. Wait till this thursday, at like 8 or 9 take him out place him in the other container and put the mouse in. Dont hover over him, but observe. He should take it within minutes. If he doesn't go for it in 15 minutes then I doubt he is going to eat it. But dont worry about that, there are plenty of ways to get picky eaters to go for it.
