    stuck head shed!

    Hey everyone.. Happy 2008!

Our little girl just went through her 2nd shed since we've gotten her. It wasn't the best, but it was better than the really dry patchy one she had the 1st time.

Without going into it alot here, (You can go through the history in my other threads..) she doesn't have the best head control right now, and is having a hrd time getting the skin off of her head - top and bottom.

I have misted her, she's gone into her bowl to soak, and after we administer her meds to her, (again, see other threads...) I hold her head in a warm towel or washcloth and have her push through a few times. I've started trying to peel it off, but that's where she draws the line. I can touch and rub her head fine - but she does NOT like me trying to get her loose skin off. And believe me - I am so gentle! I stop as soon as it looks as though it MIGHT tug on her new skin..

So in short, the shed went fine, aside from her head. Right now, I have the warm, damp towl in her tank with her - it's been in there only for about 3 hours - to aid with the humidity, and so she has something else to rub up against, but it's not so rough as her little log she has in there. When I first put it in there, she came out of her hide to rub her head all over it, but I think she was just investigating for a bit, because as of right now, she's lost interest.

Anyone have any other ideas how I can help her get this skin off of her head??

    Thanks!!

    -J

    Re: stuck head shed!

    Well - a quick little update -

We did a little more "warm washcloth holding" and most of it is off.

pretty much the top of her head, eyes, and mouth/vents came off - there is just a little bit left on her throat. I'm just hoping that she will be able to get the rest off by herself without assistance.

    *Hooray!!*

one of my redtails had a retained eyecap that would not come off. no matter what i did. so she came up to a shed again, and i bumped the humidity up a lil, and it all came off.

im glad to hear that all is well

Yeah - I don't think I would have been so worried if it were just her eyecaps. Well, actually, before i read all about it here, and just to wait until the next shed, that is....lol.. but it was her whole head, and that's her issue right now, with her being a bit sick and all.. she just doesn't have the control to rub it like she normally would.

But all is well for now as far as her head scales go. i think..

    Thanks!
