    House sitting

If you have friends house sit/pet sit do you expect that they'll go through your things?

Honestly most people I know are bathroom lookie loos and will go through your medicine cabinet and such but not anything else.

I had two friends watch my snakes and other animals while Ryan and I were in Indiana. Yesterday when I returned to work I realized I'd forgotten my work keys and wasn't sure what I'd done with them and made a comment about it, well, one of my house sitting friends popped up and said she'd seen them in the drawer to my entrance way dresser (it has papers, books, and odds and ends in it). While I didn't say anything at the time this didn't sit well with me. And while she could have had an honest reason for getting in it I don't know and she didn't tell.
I had bills out too, now I wonder if they were going through my bills...then again I'm a paranoid person by nature.
In any case, would you say something or ask about as a way of finding out what they did go through or would you just sit back and make sure not to have them house sit again OR, just ignore it?

    Re: House sitting

Well, as a professional pet sitter, I would NEVER go thru my clients things. I am on my way out but I will post more on this when I get back.

I'm one of those people that has to know everything and looks through everything, but I think you might want to ask someone else to house sit next time.. I don't just go out and look at peoples belongings especially desks that have documents and stuff...

That would definitely irritates me, I would not go through someone’s belonging and I would expect the exact same thing in return.

It’s not a matter of having something to hide it’s a matter of principal and respect.

    Re: House sitting

I would not expect someone to go through my stuff. That's a clear invasion of privacy. If I had a petsitter who did that, I would not use them again and I would tell them why. It may be harder, as you are friends. Still, I would expect my friends to respect my privacy as I would theirs.

    Re: House sitting

You might want to say "oh was there something in that drawer you needed?" and see what she has to say about it.

Personally, I'd be very offended that a friend who was there to care for a pet took it upon themselves to go through my things. Before you get upset though, give her an opening to explain herself without a feeling of confrontation. Just keep it easy and light, there might have been a reason like she was looking for a leash to walk your dog or whatever.

I would feel a tad bit violated. But I am just a private-type person. If there are farmers within 500 yards of the house, I feel like my privacy is being invaded!
I like Jo's advice about casually seeing why they were in your drawer. It could've been innocent on their part; like, they needed a flashlight or some other odd thing thast might not be in the open.

    Re: House sitting

I don't intend to go off on either of them, it just irked me. I'll have more time to talk with them tonight and I'll see what they have to say.

Jen, I grew up with no neighbors, I'm very private. My parents now have neighbors, ex-city folk who put up a house about six feet from the property line...drives my dad crazy. Me? I'm NOT a city girl, give me wide open spaces with no people for miles and I'm a happy camper.

    Re: House sitting

I hear you. Our house is set back off of the main road. You can see cars go by, and hear the larger trucks, but it is great to feel alone. But.. I joke about it. Even out here, there are people annoying me! Trespassers who ride all over the hayfields on their atvs (we stay on the trails with ours and it is mainly a manure-hauler and snowplow anyway.) And I don't think I should get started on my feelings of new-build houses going up everywhere.. I love the newer country song "International Harvester" though! If you can't take the manure, tractors on the road, and roosters crowing, go back to the burbs!
