Cameron has mites!!! a few additional questions not answered by search

Is it most likely she has had them since we got her and its taken this long for me to notice them? Otherwise where did she get them from? I do plan to put an order out for PAM but this stinks! Shes not totally loaded, i saw about five total, a few near her vent and a couple burried under her scales. Where could she have gotten them if she didnt come in with them? Is it likely she can transfer that to my other herps since they are kept within close quarters? Will the PAM hurt my red eye tree frogs?

Sorry for all the questions, ive done and read what i can through the search engine.

Anything else that would be helpful? Whats the likelyhood there are mites now in my home, potentially affecting my rats, cresties, dragons and retf? Shes only kept on papertowels and i had never taken notice of them before now but that doesnt mean they werent there.. i had just taken a closer look tonight with all the mite talk weve had.

    TIA

Do you go to reptile shows? Where do you get your feeders? Go to local pet shops?

Possible attendance at any of those places you could have picked some mites up and brought em home.

    Good luck to you!!

Could her feeders have brought mites in? When she consumes her feeders would she have ingested the mthat way? Otherwise how do you prevent that if they wont eat f/t

Ashley, here is a link to snake mites in the VPI website.
    http://www.vpi.com/publications/the_...of_snake_mites

It does say towards the end that "snake mites don't usually parasitize rodents or people but may take a meal and move on". Or possibly, the mites may have been in an earlier stage that just may not have been visible to you until now....??

I may just have to order myself a can of PAM as a precaution, since I am still buying live feeders from stores (although I am picky about where I get them from, I suppose that there is always a chance). How long is a can good for before it expires?

If any of the feeders were offered to a snake with mites in the pet store, and refused, and returned to the feeder bin, then the mites could have hitch-hiked that way.

Or you could have carried eggs on your clothes if you visited someone else with mites, or a store with mites, or a show with mites....etc

Oh, and regarding your tree frogs, it will affect their food, since it kills insects. I'd probably try to house them as far away from Cameron as possible for the 30 days that the PAM is still active in Cameron's enclosure.

To add to this it will KILL your frog. The base ingredient in PAM is absorbed through the skin of amphibians you must remove the frog completely from the area and I would suggest not returning it for several days after the treatment.

As for where they came from - how long have you had the infected snake? Also, where you get your bedding from do they also have reptiles close by?

Cameron is in the same vicinity as all my other herps, they are in the same room. I have contacted Camerons breeder to see if he so happens to have any PAM since hes local to me. I didnt notice she had mites before now and we have not brought any new animals into the house since the frogs about a montha go.. we have brought mice as feeders into the home though. We use Papertowels as substrate so its not like we brought it in.

Good to know, Sean. I wasn't sure how they directly affected amphibians, which is why I spoke specficially on their food.
