back up thermostats

So if your using em. You know how it goes.

Plug for instance your ranco in and set it to say 96. Then plug your primary into its power strip. And set it at 94. With the uth plugged into that one. Both probes in the same spot.

My question is. With your back up being an on/off. Is there any worries about the relay inside being open all the time? It essentially never turns off.

Kind of a techical question. But if your using em. Post your thoughts. Thanks everybody!!

Hmmm... I don't quite picture it. Did you ever get an answer, maybe in a PM?

Like say it takes you. To set your helix thermostat at 94 to get 92 degrees in the tub. Well you set your ranco at 96 and then plug the helix into the ranco power strip.

Then place both probes at the same spot underneath the tub or wherever you place em.

Then your helix runs your heat. And in case it ever fails the ranco will detect it and shut the heat down at 96. So in case a stat fails you won't fry a snake.

Make sense? In essence the ranco is always in the "on" position. Was that what you didn't understand? Or did you know what back up thermostats were for?

And no I haven't gotten any messages.

Well you don't have to worry it work perfectly fine however you will want to setup your ranco at least 4 degrees higher than your main thermostat.

Good to know!! And back ups only prevent over heating right? Say the main stat failes and doesn't put out any power. Will the back up kick in then?

I wouldn't think so. But I'm not positive that's why I ask.

You are 100% right, the only thing is not your uth would be running in the 96 deg. range. Well that is until you caught it and even if it were for the better part of a day the snake can always run off to the cooler side of the tank/tub and it should have no ill effects.

No. If your helix fails and puts out full power, the ranco will regulate it, and keep it to a max of 96. If your helix fails and puts out NO power, the ranco will put out full power, but none of that power will reach the heat source.
