QT and reptile rescue
Hey all-
I am not entirely sure how to explain this but I'll try.
90 day QT is the norm for new reptiles brought into a household with a collection. Do that apply to all reptiles?
How does that work with a reptile rescue? Does one wait 90 days before adopting a reptile out? Does one wait 90 days before putting a rescue in with the 'clean bill of health' rescues? If a rescue is giving a clean bill of health by a vet, do you still wait the 90 days? With reciving any number of animals, space won't be premited to have 1 animal per room, espically is your area is in great need of rescues, having a million room facility is impossible...
I am just unsure of how it works. If anyone has experiece with rescuing, or just suggestions that would be great.

Re: QT and reptile rescue
When I have taken reptiles in from Petcos adoption table. I take extra precautions.
I usually do a 90 day quarantine, plus a vet check. Luckily I haven't had to give any meds for anything yet, but if I were required to do so, I would complete that then do another quarantine to make sure things cleared up.
I keep them in a completely differen't area of the house than any other animals.
Once I know for 100% sure they are healthy I will look for a home.
I don't do this on a regular basis though, just occasionaly when I see a herp in need of help. So I wouldn't call it a rescue, just a favor to the little guys

Re: QT and reptile rescue
Layna with some rescues you'll be easily past 90 days just getting them back in decent enough shape to adopt out anyways. I'm not sure what big rescues do about their QT time.
We've always made it a policy that if a new snake comes into the QT area (a corner of our master bedroom), any snake there has to restart their QT clock. So basically if a snake is already there and is on day 42 of QT when a new snake arrives in, that first snake drops back to day 1. That's just how we do it, I'm sure big rescues with many creatures coming in must have some sort of way to manage it better. Since we don't have a lot of snakes coming and going, it's always worked for us though this way.

Re: QT and reptile rescue
I dont want to bad mouth all rescues, but most of the ones I've been around dont practise "quarantine" in a different room. The spread of mites and disease at rescues around here has put rescues into a different category for me. I called around to the few rescues around here to adopt a BP before I bought one for my first snake, but they either don't want to adopt them out, or they were just sick places to be in and I wouldnt want any animal from them. I wish all rescues were created equal, but in my experience, there are more bad than good. It's great to want to help out, but when your rescue turns into a dump, how are you rescueing anything?

Re: QT and reptile rescue
I am sure no authority on the subject but from what I have read it is fairly common for a rescue operation to be understaffed, short on storage space and money and they just do the best that they can.. They might just be able to keep an animal alive and when you adopt one it will require immediate medical care. Some rescue operations may not have those problems at all. If you were obtaining an animal from a rescue operation I think that you would need to check out how they operate and no matter what you see keep the new animal in a separate room from your others for at least a few months.
