    Loud bedding!

Wow! I switched to the wood-pellet bedding for my rats. I never knew how loud it is! My rats like to dig it around their tanks, and it hits the glass, and it sounds like someone is shooting a bb gun in my rat reoom I like this bedding for its low-odor strength and economy.. but the sound really shocked me last night when I was home alone. I thought some ghostly hand was tapping the window..

    Re: Loud bedding!

I have 2 pet cages inside the house that use it and what I do when I change them is to mist the cage down (water spray bottle I use for the snakes) the small amount of water starts the pellets breaking down and takes away most of that noise. I haven't noticed any change in how long they last in doing this...might be worth a try for you.

    Re: Loud bedding!

I just tried the woody pet for the first time and I agree it is loud. I am not sure how much I like this bedding. I put down a shallow layer as advised, but it does not seem to be enough bedding to me. Most of my rats push it out of the way and they end up just walking on the bare tub floor and through their feces. Do you have this problem so far? I also don't know how well this is going to work when my females are nursing litters. I am going to give it a couple weeks, but I think I may end up using a combo of shavings and the woody pet.

    Re: Loud bedding!

Hm.. LJ, I think that I am going to try that spray method. I am -pretty- sure that they recommend doing that when you use it as horse bedding.. my friend used it in her stalls, and she hosed it until it was sawdusty.
I like the low-odor aspect of this bedding. And it is not as dusty as the pine or aspen shavings that I have used before. I actually used to use it for my cat litter box, but stopped when I needed to pinch pennies, and never went back for some reason.
I noticed that my females who're close to having babies, shoved it to one side and were on the bare floor. What I did was, I gave each of them an old sock. They all seem to be using the sock as a resting place, and poop/pee on the opposite end where the bedding is.

    Re: Loud bedding!

I give my females aspen for a nest. They 'usually' dont poop and pee around the youngsters and will go over to the pellets to do their business. Also, it avoids the pups from getting their noses stuffed up with sawdust. When they are 2 weeks old, I give just enough aspen for a small sleeping nest, and for 3 weeks and up its all pellets. Unless I'm raising them, then they get something like 6 feet of aspen to tunnel around in.
