    Rex and his Harem

A couple weeks ago, I needed to pick up a few really small rat pinks (all mine were too big) and as I am in the back of the pet store digging under ticked off mothers I notice a large rat sitting in a cage all by himself. I look again and sure enough he is a tan hooded rex...stick my hand in and he is super friendly. I ask why he is back here and am told they thought he was so cute they didn't want to sell him as a feeder (that is all this store sells rats for)...so of course I scoop him up (have been looking for some new blood and a rex to boot).

So here is Rex (after a nice bath)

    And he new Harem

Please don't release captive bred rats into the wild population. It's unfair for a creature that's never had to hunt for it's dinner, it's unfair to the wild rodent population to burden it with yet another rat to compete with, it adds to a rodent problem for humans and it gives snake people a bad rep when they do this sort of thing. In the future, either learn to properly size your feeder rats or make allowances to keep a live prey item over to the next week to use as a feeder. Release of any captive animal because we just don't want to deal with it is an irresponsible act.

(sorry about that hijack Sean). Very nice rat! How you folks luck out! I never stumble across anything interesting here in Toledo - The World Center for Boring Rats.

That bad boy looks like a topaz! Very nice pickup, and I am super jealous.

Wow; that guy is a diamond (or a topaz..) in the rough I would have scarfed him up too.
I use a rex stud for all of my breedings. Rex blood tends to pass along traits of sturdiness and strength, in my experience.

Thanks Jo...but not to worry I will still bring you some new blood...just haven't made a trip yet to MI. Maybe I will get some new rex blood to pass your way.

That would be nice...I plan to watch him with these girls first and if he performs well I will put him with most of my other girls as a way of getting new blood in the line. It is about that time to change out my breeders (I picked up 50 new girls last week...that need to grow up before they are ready)
