    Little help

    Hi everyone!

I have found this forum very informative and have a few questions i would like to ask.

I am looking at getting my first Ball Python. My husband and I have an Aquarium we brought a few years ago with the intention of have salt water fish. This hasn't ever happened and the tank is currently sitting in our front room collecting dust.

Obviously i have been reading quite alot about the care for Ball pythons but would like to know if the tank we have is suitable. It is a Juwel Trigon 190 - 40 gallon but if you look it up on the net you will see it is a corner unit - so most of the space is in the height.

I am aware that most sites etc recomend 20-30 for an adult but would appreciate it if you could let me know if this tank would be ok??

Also is it possible for you to share some of your tank set ups with us as we just about think we have it cracked but then read something completely different.

Any help would be great thank you

That would have been great if you had posted a pic but even without I can tell you that it will not be the proper type of enclosure for a BP

You have to keep in mind that BP are ground dwellers and that floor space is more important than height

The ideal enclosure for an adult is a 30 gallons tank (L: 36.00  W: 18.00  H: 12.00). The 40 gallons has the same foot print and more height, which is not needed.

Also keep in mind that if you buy a baby you will need to start with a small enclosure to avoid stress (10 gallons).

Hi thank you for answering so quickly - i am adding a hyperlink to the juwel site for you so you can see the tank and the dimensions. Sorry - i realise that the height thing came out wrong. I know that they are far more concerned with the footprint of the aquarium - my concern is that the height would be a problem as i am aware they are shy and need to feel secure in their environment. I hope that makes sense?!
It is an adult we are looking at having - and i really want to get everything right for him/her so as little stress is caused.

I just had a look at it it is not has high as I was expecting it to be, you can try to make it work the concern will be to be able to maintain proper temps, try to set it up with everything you need and see if the temps hold (do this for at list a week).

As far as security you can add some wines and other things to make it secure for your BP (the more you add the more you will have to clean)

The other thing that you need to find out is what will you do about the top? (Obviously you need airflow but you also need the top to be escape proof)
