Re: Pastel Rock'n it with another one!

I've read/heard that plastic releases a chemical similar to estrogen when it's warmed/heated. There have been studies done and they found it to cause birth defects and other problems in both humans and animals. These scientists did a study using frogs because they reproduce quickly. They found this body of water that had high levels of estrogen (from pollution) and studied the frogs and also studied frogs fromanother body of water with lower levels of estrogen. Anyway, the frogs in the higher levels of estrogen had several different types of birth defects.

I'll see if I can find the links and get them posted up here... I can't recall where I read this at. Has anyone else heard this?

It's posted in general herp. One piece of advice that was passed on to me was to not have a water bowl in the enclosure while you have the breeding pair together. This helps to reduce the transmission of anything like a RI. Breeding is a stressful time for them, and stress can often induce a RI. By eliminating them sharing the same water, you can minimize the chances of cross contamination.

Just thought I'd pass along the advice that was shared with me.

Now - on to the more important stuff - congratulations on that pairing! Can't wait to see pretty little pastels! Hope mom passes on some of her blushing to her babies!

Hmmm interesting Robin, I can see the sense in that. As well you wouldn't have two bigger snakes flipping over a full water bowl and making a mess of things either (something that did happen to us more than once last breeding season). Something to think about.

Congrats on the breeding btw. Lovely snakes!

Congrats Nick. It looks like you are out of the chute and running this breeding season. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Kara gave me that advice, actually. Made perfect sense to me, and who am I to argue with her experience?

Thanks Muddoc and every one else!...there is a study on plastic getting heated up and releasing toxins but the study was done for microwaves at HIGH heat. cooking doesnt even start until 120 degrees and even then it is at " warmer stage" ( in ovens) being that the temp of the cages dont go above 94 from what i read it doesnt pose a problem...the lead is another issue
