i cant get over (cl related)

how many ball pythons, milk snakes, boas, exc are available for "adoption" on craigslist!! there must be at least 10 on the surrounding areas to our city (ft. lauderdale, west palm beach, miami). about 6mos ago there were no snakes of any kind on there and now all of a sudden there are all kinds!

    whats up with that?

I notice a lot also. There is also a pretty hefty demand for them in my area though; they do not last long. I put a normal male up on there not too long ago, and he was adopted within a week..

Jen, what sort of screening did you do for potential adoptors? I know that you had mentioned before how very picky you are about homes that your snakes go to, that you wouldn't even give one to your mother, she'd have to buy it from you.

Since you're less likely to know the adoptor on CL, how do you determine that they go to the best home possible?

Re: i cant get over (cl related)

I put the ad up, and through it, we met up with a couple who were recently married. They sent me pics of themselves with their snakes, showing their cages (tubs, proper setups, Helix t-stats with FW, etc.) They adopted our corn snake and more recently, the BP.. they were "repeat customers" who would probably adopt or buy from us again. They were actually cool people and we ended up talking about herps and tattoos for a few hours.
Quite honestly, whether I am selling a morph BP on my website, or adopting-out on CL, I screen the people who want to buy or adopt. There are many people that wholesale their normals to pet stores and I don't see CL as anything worse than that.
Now I know that CL does not allow "selling." I don't go against this by, for example, advertising Pastels for $100 or something like that. I only adopted out normal males on there that were/are pet-quality snakes, and I saw and see CL as a great venue to meet people that almost lived in our own backyard, but who we never would have met otherwise.

Re: i cant get over (cl related)

I forgot about the adoption-fee topic though. I charge something around $30-40. It helps to screen out the cheapskates who would just want a snake for free, or those that would just grab a free snake and re-sell it to a pet store or something. When I had a guy tell me that he was poor and "needed a month to come up with the $20," I kindly told them that the snake had been adopted.. and it was actually by that time. If people can't come up with an adoption fee, I doubt they'd spring for a surprise vet visit that could cost three times that much money; not a good potential home. The couple we adopted to was fairly well-off; not rich, but that combined with their experience when I quizzed them, and their other animals and website, helped me make my decision.
Another perk of CL for adoptions; it cuts out the shipping issue. Many people who are just wanting a normal for a pet, are not into the idea of paying $50 for shipping. Whereas, buyers of expensive morphs would want to pay extra for shipping such a high-ticket snake, your basic pet-snake-wanting person might rather buy locally, especially if leary about ordering online.

Cool, I was just wondering. Didn't I read somewhere that you did sell some snakes to your petstore, or am I thinking of someone else?

Re: i cant get over (cl related)

I found this guy that works out of Cheektowaga, NY. (acually, through CL!) He has a really nifty herp shop and Mark went to check it out today, and we are working out a package deal with him for my remaining pastel and normal males. I thought I was letting them go to a friend's shop.. but I changed my mind. In all honesty, I do not think that this person (my friend) would be caring for them as they need to be.. and I cannot be there every day making sure. Not that she is a bad person; but her employee is pretty busy and they really do not know much about BPs; she is looking for another worker to replace her. I wish I could do it, but I need my darned fulltime job; though it'd be much funner to work a pet store. But also, the temps in her store are a bit cooler than I would like for the snakes, since she does mainly fish in heated tanks and rodents that can live good at 65-degree temps.. but this was a pretty tough decision since it involved a friend, but it is all good. I have some "sleazier" local pet stores that would gladly take them, but they just don't keep their animals well enough, and I have mostly given up even shopping at them; I would actually rather get rats as needed at Petco than the local people.. but since I found this new guy, that has changed.
I would definately urge anyone using CL, to use caution. That bit about the woman who was murdered, scared the tar out of me honestly. No one is safe these darned days!

Re: i cant get over (cl related)

Yeah, my local pet store that I pick up extra feeders from and have gotten some adult surrenders from, I would never sell babies to. Although he asks me every time I'm in there when I'll have babies, because he's sure I'll sell him some. We've come a long way with each other. He used to be very know it all with me, but now he has a healthy respect for me, he knows that I most likely know more than he does about ball pythons.

I've got several people interested in babies from my clutches this year and I plan to hold back quite a few females (all my possible het clowns and some nice lemon pastels).

I think it will be cool to have some of the babies go to folks here so I can watch them grow up!

Re: i cant get over (cl related)

I know I sold two to forum members this year (one pastel male, one normal girl.) I hate it that fedex is being so foot-draggingly slow or I would have shipped them out already. Either this week, they get in gear, or I will ship through my friend.. I can't wait much longer because of the weather getting colder..
I am holding back a pastel girl, and a normal female. I just got attached to the two, and they are not going anywhere; you know how that goes
