Found Katie! And a baby kitten... some care questions...?

For those of you that haven't heard the story: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...t=54726&page=2

I had a BAD weekend. BUT! Yesterday I went out driving around again, trying to find Katie... and found her! She was less than a block from my house, laying in the grass on the other side of the street. She was terrified and a little scuffed up---she has some scrapes on her face and one of her canines is chipped---but otherwise doing just fine. She seems a little sore this morning, but definitely still jumped the kiddie-gate to follow me into the shower, so I think she'll be okay

I'm soooo happy!!!! I think this is what happened: she fell out of the bottom of the car when mom went to run her errand, and ran into a bush or something on my neighbor's property. But, he mowed yesterday afternoon. When he started mowing, she got frightened and ran across the road, but didn't know where to go so she just lay down in the grass. This would explain why I couldn't find her earlier in the day.

I don't really care, though, I'm just glad I found her! I wouldn't leave her alone at all last night, lol.

Anyway, here's the second part to that story. Somewhere along the way, Katie picked up a stowaway. When I found her, she was curled up with a little kitten... and I mean little. Maybe a couple weeks old at the most. He's walking, barely, and his eyes and ears are open. But he's definitely still on mother's milk.

I immediately went out and bought some Just Born milk replacement and have been feeding that with an eye dropper. He was really weak in taking it yesterday, but this morning gulped it down. He's taking about 4.0 mL at a time... every four-six hours. I'm just wondering if this is enough?

He's still so small... I have to wipe him down after he eats and stimulate him to pee/poo. Like I said, he seemed really weak last night, but was much better this morning after a few meals in him.

Any help with this would be appreciated! I think Katie was looking for any company she could get yesterday evening, because she won't come around the kitten anymore---she gets this pissy look when she sees me with him. LOL... I have to be careful to feed him when she's not around

Thanks for any help and for all your support!!!

When i fostered kittens i fed them until, they turned their heads away from me, and wouldn't drink anymore i had success with this. Maybe somebody else will chime in. I think i would separate Katie from the kitten, you can never be sure whats going around, and if she got into a fight i would be concerned and maybe think about a vet visit, feral cats can be nasty............anyway good luck! keep us posted!

Oh I missed the post that said Katie had gone missing! I'm so glad you found her hon and she's brought you home a little buddy too!

I'm just thinking....you mentioned she has those scrapes and the chipped tooth. I've had a cat hit by a car when she suddenly streaked out the door and she had a tooth chip just like Katie. I distinctly remember the vet tech at the time, when we rushed Pusster Kitty in, saying that these tooth chips are often seen in hit by cars. Do you think she was either hit or was in your mom's motor when she pulled out? You may want to have her just checked over by your vet just to be safe. I know with Puss she looked fine other than the facial scuffs and the tooth chip but the vet while doing a hands on exam found her tail base badly damaged. Subsequently her tail was amputated as it was determined to have permanent nerve damage so she couldn't move it to defecate. Had we not seen the vet it might have been missed that her tail was so badly damaged.

Btw, even if it sounds horrible....she was a younger cat and went on to live to the ripe old age of 18 without her tail and never seemed to miss it.

    Jo,
I pretty sure she was hiding up in the car when mom went to run errands. She did that with our last vehiclethat we kept in the garage. Mom was innocent in the whole thing... she just wasn't thinking about the cat being out there because Katie normally isn't. In any case, Katie probably jumped from the car while it was moving at a good 20-30 MPH.

I'm keeping an eye on her. I don't think she's eaten since we brought her back... but she has used her litter box.

I agree, I think a vet trip is in order later this week. Probably for the kitten, as well.

And no troubles keeping Katie away from the kitten... she won't go near it!!!

Re: Found Katie! And a baby kitten... some care questions...?

real quick crazy story..............i had a cat that was a freak..........seriously a freak chewed on furniture like a dog....anyway, he decided he was bad one night and ripped a screen apart and took off. now he was scared of the outside but, he thought he was hot stuff in the house "he ran the place" -so i'm assuming he wanted to chase a bird or mole or something outside that day! we looked all over for him........i mean all over no luck......2 or 3 nights later he comes screaming, scratching at the same window he got out of! the look on his face was classic, he was scared to death. Never went near that window again! lol

P.s. Jax was his name and he lives with my 80year old grandmother.......still chews her slippers for some reason, she thinks its the best thing in the world....(whatever makes her happy)

sorry this was off topic, but it goes to show how crazy cats can be sometimes

Re: Found Katie! And a baby kitten... some care questions...?

Lol... they can be pretty crazy!

I just talked to my mother. She tried her hand at feeding the kitten, and said he did really well. He apparently climbed out of box we are keeping him when she went inside to get more milk, lol. He must be feeling a little better. She has decided she wants to name him Fred---unless he's a she, in which case she will be Fredricka, or Freddie for short

Katie's doing well, too. Mom said she's acting normally, running from the kids (my mother baby-sits during the day) and trying to keep out of the way.

Rock on!!!! So happy I don't even care about the water in the basement

Re: Found Katie! And a baby kitten... some care questions...?

Lynn, I'm so glad that you got Katie back!

As far as the baby goes...
The back of the formula container will tell you how much to feed per oz of kitten. Weigh the kitten to figure out how much its total daily volume is, and divide that by the number of feedings you are doing each day to find the volume the kitten needs to get per feeding. I always try to get at least that amount in, if not more.
In doing the math, it is easier for me to convert everything to mls and grams. There are 30mls (or grams) to one oz. You want the kitten to average around 120g weight gain per week, or one lb/month.

Eyes open means around two-three weeks; I usually bottle them until 5-6 weeks old. I provide water and a litterbox (a very shallow pan, or disposable baking dish) at 3 weeks, and soft food/weaning formula at 5 weeks. I've had a few transition to solid food at 4 weeks, but most seem to take longer. KMR is my preferred formula, and I recommend buying a canister of the powder for around $25, as it will go much further than the little cartons of pre-mixed. They also make a second-stage weaning formula that works very well, especially in combination with the little jars of meat-based baby food.

Also, if you post a close-up picture of the genitals, I can sex it for you.
