Two of my three snakes have really started cage-cruisin lately - specifically they have started trying to escape!
In fact, my young corn was out for 3 days and I didn't even know it! The funny thing is, it wasn't because I wasn't paying attention. I was actually checking for him a couple of times a day. The reason I didn't freak out was that I was convinced he was buried. You see, he totally buries himself for several days before shedding. I've been through this before and I decided this time I wasn't going to freak out and dig everything up. It wasn't easy and I wanted to dig him up so bad but I kept telling myself to relax. Then the other day my wife just happened to catch him coming out of the closet (). I still can't believe how lucky we were. We have two cats, one of which is a card-carrying lizard killer. Not to mention a snake of his size in our house is like a needle in a haystack.
I figured out how he did it and I've corrected the cage. I also fed him a double meal which settled him down for a couple of days. I figured he was hungry because I was switching him from a 5 to 7 day feeding cycle and he was just at the cusp of needing two pinkies instead of one. However, today, even though he is still as fat as can be, he was doing his best to re-engineer his escape.
My corn has always been a real active snake so I didn't really pay alot of attention when he started to show more interest in the cage top lately. I figured he was getting bigger and testing new boundaries. However, my BP has also started in with a bunch of cage cruising and a very clear interest in getting out. This is extremely odd for my BP because he has a very stable setup that he's been comfortable with for several months now. Its very much out of character for him to pay attention to the cage top. Likewise, my corn has always been real active but isn't usually pre-occupied with escape.
The fact that both of these snakes started at the same time has led me to wonder about the room they are in. Temperatures have been roughly the same. The only thing different is that, since its finally cooling off outside, we've been running the AC less and leaving the windows open.
Could the season or the fact that there is a bunch of fresh outside air (with new smells I'm sure) be the cause?
