Recessive x Dominant (ex. AlbinoSpider)
I have 1.1 Spiders and 1.1 Pastels... looking to get an albino (just cuz i love the looks.)
but also wondering about the genetics of an Albino Spider...
i have a basic knowledge of Dom (Spider) CoDom (Pastel) and Recessive (Albino)...
and i understand: Albino x Normal = all hets
Spider x Spider = all spiders
as far as i know....Given... Sn/SS ( Capitol S being the spider gene, SS being homozygous with no "Super" trait. )
And..... aa (recessive homozygous "visual" albino)
if i bred my Sn to the aa
i get
or
S n S S
a Sa na a Sa Sa
a Sa na a Sa Sa
i am thinking that my genetics may just be a little rudimentary for this stuff... but heres what im getting... in my own little brain.
a bunch of Spider het Albino
with some just plain het Albinos.....
so... what are the genetics of an albino spider??? and how is this achieved???

Spider x Spider = all spiders
[QUOTE]
That would only work out if one of your spiders was homozygous for the spider mutation. I don't want to start that discussion here too as it's the subject of the Super Spider thread but I'm not sure there are any homozygous spiders.
Assuming your spiders are the much more common (or perhaps only) heterozygous type then each egg from spider X spider has at least a 25% chance of hatching out a normal. Basically you could think of spiders as het for normal which is recessive to spider.
If I where trying to make an albino spider and had an adult albino and an adult spider of the opposite genders I would expect that when I bred them together I would get 100% het albinos and about 50% of those would also be spiders. If my original albino where the female I'd be hoping that one of the spider het albino offspring was a male. Raise that spider het albino up as quickly as possible and breed it back to the albino and get a clutch that would be about 50% albino and also 50% spider with an intersection of about 25% spider albinos.

Re: Recessive x Dominant (ex. AlbinoSpider)
Great post, Randy!
Just to expand a little…
In terms of pure genetics, recessive/co-dom/dominant all work the same. It’s the visual appearance that’s different. I’ll use albinos to illustrate recessive, pastels to illustrate co-dom, and spiders to illustrate dominant (although its not proven that they are in fact dominant, or that homozygous spiders are even possible, could be a lethal combination)
Albino: Albino = homozygous, het albino = heterozygous albino (one albino gene on the albino locus)
Pastel : Super = homozygous, pastel = heterozygous
Spider: spider = homozygous OR heterozygous
het albino x het albino should produce:
25% albinos
50% het albinos
25% normals
het pastel x het pastel should produce:
25% supers
50% pastels (het)
25% normals
het spider x het spider should produce:
25% homozygous spiders
50% spiders (het)
25% normals
(Visually, you should get 75% spiders and 25% normals. But genetically, the above applies.)
Albino x normal WILL produce all het albinos
Super Pastel x normal WILL produce all Pastels (het)
Homozygous Spider x normal WILL produce all Spiders (het)
Albino x het albino:
50% Albinos
50% het Albinos
NO normals
Super Pastel x Pastel (het):
50% Supers
50% Pastels (het)
NO normals
Homo Spider x Spider (het):
50% Homo Spiders
50% Spiders (het)
NO normals
Albino x Albino = ALL albinos
Super Pastel x Super Pastel = ALL Super Pastels
Homo Spider x Homo Spider = ALL Homo Spiders
Dominant vs recessive does NOT impact the likelihood of the offspring receiving the gene, only how the gene is expressed if it is passed.
Hope this helps some!

Re: Recessive x Dominant (ex. AlbinoSpider)
Actually easy to make..
1. Cross your spider with albino to make "spider het. albinos (AaSs)"
2. Nest you cross albino x spider het. albino to make albino spiders.
aass x AaSs = aaSs AaSs aass Aass
25% albino spider (aaSs)

thanks a lot you guys, that helped out a lot...
and my bad on the spider x spider makes all spiders. i should have realized that, but i guess sometimes wishful thinking clouds the brain.
