Humidity in tank

How do you keep constant humidity (60-70). Mine will stay at 60-70 for an hour then start dropping slowly. I already constrict air by putting a moist towel over one half of the cage. I spray the cage down every now and then and I have a huge water bowl. I can tell that when my fan is on it does not help.

3 layers of tin foil shiny side down with duct tape holding it down to the top. with a hole big enough for the lamp and some air flow but not a whole lot. what substrate are you using? i use aspen in my 40 gal tank and my female is in shed and for the last 48 hours i have maintained 70-80 humidity.

Fan will not help like you've already noticed. You can wrap your screen top in something like aluminum foil taped down with an area open for air circulation. Are you using a heating lamp? These tend to suck up the humidity rather quickly, an under tank heater might help maintain better humidity for you. How far does the humidity go down to?

you don't need constant 24/7 high humidity!


my humidity varies between 30-70% during the year.

i prefer to have let the humidity vary from high to low, so things can dry out.

pay attention during the shed cycle and keep humidity high then.

too much constant moisture can lead to problems, like mold,mildew,fungus, and belly/scale rot.

I assume your snake is in shed? If not, your humidity does not need to be that high.

If you can't get the humidity to stay high enough while he is shedding, you can make a "humid hide", which is just another hide that has either shallow water in it, or damp paper towels or moss. You can make it out of a plastic food storage container with the lid on (to keep the humidity trapped) and make a hole for the snake to get in.

Also, be sure you are measuring your humidity correctly. It needs to be measured on the cool side of the enclosure or else you'll get a lower reading.

There's a sticky somewhere on this site that shows how to cover your screen top to minimize moisture loss. Basically you use three layers of aluminum foil, shiny side down to the screen, taped on with duct tape leaving a hole on the warm side about 4-6" square for circulation. Because I use a night bulb lamp, I added a section of thick clear plastic in the middle to let the light in but keep the moisture from getting out.

Normal everyday humidity should be 50-60% measured on the cool side with a digital hygrometer. When snake is in shed, that should go up to 60-70%. For those times, either add a humid hide if you have the room or lay a moist paper towel over most of the opening left on the screen and mist it along with the tank to keep humidity up.
