Rodent Coats and Oils

Hey all-

I think I read it on here...it may have been a rat/mouse forum I am lurking at...

Anyway it says that a weekly single serving of bread dipped in oil is good for the coat of both rats and mice. They said that veggie oil could be used, but I hear olive oil most commonly suggested. All I have on hand is corn oil. Do you think that's ok to use? We really don't buy olive oil just cause it's expensive. So what do you think?

Unless you are feeding a substandard (non-complete) food exclusively then I cannot see any value to it. Sure oil could help a dry coat (just like in a dog) but if you are feeding a well balanced diet they should be getting all the oils and vitamins they need without supplimentation being necessary.


Keep in mind excess oil means excess fat which will lead to a higher incident of cancer in the long run.

If the animal has a bad coat, it can mean underlying health problems. If your just taking precautions, it may not be necessary with a proper, well rounded diet.
