Wanted to Vent
And I know ya'll are good listeners
I have an '07 CH female I found a few months ago. She's an awesome eater, always sheds perfect, very healthy... She's always been in my hatchling rack and is in a 6qt tub.
I noticed this past Saturday that she has a respiratory infection. It's only to the point of thick saliva, slight bubbling in her mouth, but STILL! She's my first since 2004, to ever have one, and I really don't know why. She's already had 2 shots of 100mg/ml baytril(which is what I keep on hand), one on Saturday and one Monday. She gets 0.01ml diluted with a bit of saline(less than 0.1ml) so she doesn't get scars and so the baytril doesn't sting going in.
She shed on Sunday and seems to feel a bit better. Probably because she can breathe now. I've upped her humidity and moved her to the very bottom of the rack(I do everything to her last and disinfect my clothes/arms/hands before touching anything else). If I need to take her out to where I went to tech school, for quarantine, I can do so. Temps are normally 95/80(I'm adding another strip of 3" to every shelf, so the ambient temps will be 84 or so). Temps don't fluctuate and they don't go under 80.
Anyway.. Just wanted to vent. Hopefully she'll be ok.

Re: Wanted to Vent
Really a bummer, but thankfully you know what to do. Good luck!

Re: Wanted to Vent
That is very odd Becky just to get one out of the blue...especially when you have so much experience with a proper setup. I wonder if she was pre-disposed...by this I mean since she was a CH maybe her immune system isn't what is should be?

Re: Wanted to Vent
I dunno! I have alot of other CH babies/subadults and no one has ever gotten sick.
I was treating my het Pied male for the RI that he came with, but he's been over that for quite awhile. I was extremely careful about not cross-contaminating.
I'm going to be mixing up some Parv-O-Way to use on everyone for awhile. It is very effective on bacteria and viruses, and I usually spray it on my clothing and shoes if I'm quarantining rats or snakes.

Re: Wanted to Vent
Sorry to hear about the RI. And in the summertime? Some animals just have weak imnune systems and always get sick. I had a snake like that last year. Hopefully your's isn't. Best of Luck!

Re: Wanted to Vent
Do you think it might be the air conditioning? The humidity in the tubs stays 50%+, but a few snakes have been having stuck sheds. They get the head off and wait for me to get them out and hand-shed them. The shed is still soft, so I just think they get lazy and don't want to do it, LOL. The majority of the others(I have around 40 now) are still having perfectly complete sheds. Everyone eats great, has normal bowel movements, clean skin.. I don't know.
Seems all of mine do better in the winter! Weirdos.

Re: Wanted to Vent
My ball pythons are always prescribed Amikacin at 3 mg/kg... not sure what differences there are between using it compared to Baytril.

Re: Wanted to Vent
They are just different classes of antibiotics that work differently on the bacteria and cells in the body. Baytril is a fluoroquinolone and amikacin is an aminoglycoside. I think Amiglyde is more toxic to the kidneys than Baytril is. I just prefer to use the Baytril first, and then get out the big guns if I have to.

Re: Wanted to Vent
I hope for a full recovery. I would freak out if any of my snakes had an RI (knock on wood). Good luck.
