Another rescue story

Last night we got a call from the humane society (that we work for) for us to come pick up some rabbits that were on a property that they were also taking around 13-14 dogs. The story goes, the owner of the property was evicted from the house and just left all his animals there with no food and no water. The humane society got a call last month about them so they went over and gave them food and water, after they put the food out, it was all eaten by the rats that infest the property (ive never seen so many rats). There were also several rabbits that had gotten out and ended up being killed and eaten by the dogs. Last night we got a call to come get the rabbits, when we pulled up to the property, our hearts just sank, it was a very sad thing to see. The first dog you see had most of its hair gone and infested with huge fleas. Buts it was also a dog that was very sweet and wanted to be loved so bad. Farther back the rest of the dogs (full blooded Border Collies) were chained up to trees and have been there so long that there was no grass left in the spot, just plain dirt and rocks. Their dog houses were filled with mud and poo. There was a 5 month old puppy that was in a small cage and trying everything to get out while we were there. After we got the rabbits we went over to another ladies property who also works for the humane society and set up dog kennels for the dogs until the Border Collie Rescue comes and gets them. While we were wetting up the kennels several people went back over to get the dogs. Once those dogs got in the kennel and felt the grass, you could just look in their eyes and tell that they are "relieved" and looked so happy. When they went to get the last load of dogs, they ran into the owner, he was so upset that they were being taken and even cried a bit. He said these dogs were his family and thought when we took them that they would be put down. The president of the humane society reassured him that non will be put down and the owner seemed somewhat pleased and even thanked us for that. Very sad thing to see spending 7 hours rescuing them but once we got them out of there and onto grass with fresh food and water, it made it all worth while.

Those poor beautiful things... it's so sad when people 'honestly think they are doing their animals good' in situations like that. At least that owner seemed to care. Well, good thing you guys got them all out into better conditions. Way to go.

it's so fortunate that there are organizations (humane society, PAWS, etc.) that are willing to go in and do this hard work and take these poor babies in...

Good lord Aric, I'm sitting here itching just thinking about those poor dogs all flea bitten. Thank goodness for folks like you that step in and help these animals get into better homes (even if they had to be humanely euthanized that's got to be better than to be left to suffer and die slowly of thirst and starvation).
