    Vermiculite?

I see some people using what looks like an ultra fine type of vermiculite for hatching eggs in.... where can I get it? Can it be ordered online?

    Thanks!

    Re: Vermiculite?

I was able to fine some fine grade vermiculite at my local Home Depot and Walmart, but I didn't use it to hatch my bp eggs. (I used it for my gecko eggs) I found a nice coarse grade of vermiculite at my local garden center. You may want to grab your phone book and call around, to save yourself the hassle of driving all over.

Yeah, the local garden center didn't have it, right down the street.... I may check out home depot or lowes next time I'm out. Thanks!

You could try Aric (worldcupkeeper)'s site.... I seem to remember him having a few good transactions within our community.... http://www.freewebs.com/rockytopreptiles/incubation.htm

    Re: Vermiculite?

None of the stores where I live any more carry it. Lowe's used to special order it for me, but they've stopped doing that. But hopefully you will have more luck. Luckily I work in a plant lab and we use it a lot and I was able to take some of that. But it's becoming harder to come by, something to do with the mines where they mine it from.

    Re: Vermiculite?

I like the verm. that is in the bigger coarser pieces. It is not powdery and dusty like the smaller grade stuff. It is scary that it is in short supply.. maybe we will have to sanitize it and re-use it year after year? :/
    I mix mine with perlite.

    Re: Vermiculite?

I guess garden centers prefer perlite now days instead of Vermiculite, I've used perlite before for colubrids and beardeds, but not ball pythons. May try experimenting with it... try out a few eggs and see how they do.

    Thanks for the responses!

    Re: Vermiculite?

Perlite and vermiculite make a nice mix together. The perlite is a bit smaller-moleculed for my taste, but the larger chunkiness of the verm compliments it nicely and it creates a nice element for water storage with some larger spaces between the irregular verm.
Am I losing you here? lol.
