    Made it to Day 50..

Gin's clutch is at day 50. And I do not think i have an ulcer yet; but I could be wrong. How DO you get through this last leg of time without having a conniption?! I swear, between stress from work and this, I am headed for the loony bin!

    Jen,
That's half of the reason I cut my eggs. At least you get to see SOMETHING a little earlier. LOL.

I wouldn't recommend it - there is no real reason to be in a hurry.

Here is part of a blog (dated July 8th) from Jason at Jason's Jungle...I am sure he would be OK with me sharing it so what happened to him doesn't happen to others.

"Speaking of disappointment, I made my biggest mistaken in herping. It's embarrasing as hell but hopefully it will stop somebody from making the same mistake. I cut my axanthic eggs before they pipped (mistake #1, I have NEVER done this...I always wait until the first one pips then I cut). That by itself wasn't a problem. What was a problem is that I started poking and prodding the babies inside to see what they were (just looking for that first axanthic). This is a really stupid idea by itself but throw in the fact that I did it with my scissors that I use to cut the eggs. Short story long (and using some educational guessing), I poked a hole in their embryonic sac. The embryonic fluid (or egg 'guts' I suppose) seaped in and basically drowned them. I did have one stillborn that I don't think was my fault but I have flushed 3 additional babies down the toilet in the past 5 days. It was one of the most depressing things I've had to do."

Curosity killed the cat or in this case the snakes.

I don't recommend it to everyone. I have cut on day 50 before, but usually wait until day 52. I would say that if you have never watched anyone do it before, I would not attempt it. If done right, it is my opinion, that it doe not affect the animal at all. I actually cut a clutch of eggs this weekend, and did not puncture the internal membrane. The snake was still in a sack, not exposed to the outside air, directly, but I had a little window to peek in on.

I am not necessarily telling Jen to cut her eggs, but was stating that I do cut mine at or near this time frame.

Re: Made it to Day 50..

I'm at day 52 right now. This being my first clutch, I've never cut before. Is the only reason to cut to make sure they all pip? If you don't, do you have a higher probability that the snakes won't be able to hatch and therefore die?

there is also a difference between making a 1/2" slit and cutting a sunroof!

no absolute reason to slit, just wait it out. if anyone decides to cut, i second what tim said. let someone show you how first.
