glass tank assistance...

hello everyone,

i ordered a ranco tstat and UTH from rich@reptile basics which should be here soon, but my question to all the members on here with glass tank setups..is where would the suggested place be to put the tstat probe at? i've read other threads and they all mention users taping the probe directly to the flexwatt..but in my case im using a UTH with a 20 gal tank..ive seen some users say that they tape the probe inside of the tanks floor directly above the UTH/flexwatt and lay a thin layer of substrate down..but other members say that its not good to have the probe inside because the snake might move it or it may get wet..but isnt the inside temp what i want to monitor and not the outside?..so i need any and all information anyone has to offer regarding probe placement for a glass tank.

oh i've also read the sticky for the glass tank setup and saw the way that the probe was setup but i dont think that would be a good idea to have a probe dangling inside the habitat..:/

well I would say tape it to the UTH outside the tank if you can.

Yes you want to monitor the temps inside the tank but you do that with the thermometer and adjust the thermostat till you get the right temps inside.

This usually means your themostat is set a little higher than the desired temps but you really need to set this up and tweak it for your own setup.

It's also important not to put too much substrate in as this means the UTH has to be waay to hot to reach the desired temp at the surface but then if your snake burrows down it might get burnt. Try to aim around 92-94 at the bottom of the tank directly on the glass and 90-92 at the surface in the hot end hide. This gaurantee's he can get the temps he needs safely.

I agree but to clarify you should tape it between the UTH and the glass (sandwiched between) as most commercial UTH are somewhat directional (meaning they send the most heat in one direction - ie up toward the tank)

ok; well for my substrate i switched from reptibark to newspaper and when u say aim for 92-94 thats without the assistance of a heatlamp right? and i dont know if its possbile to burrow in newspaper; if it is i havent seen my BP try it.

Nah they can't burrow in newspaper - but they can get below it and lie directly on the heatsource.

Well if your UTH and thermostat can maintain the correct temperatures in the tank then I can't see any reason to use a supplemental heatlamp. Check the cool side temps as well however as this can be a reason to use it.

How are you measuring your temperatures at the moment?

im using a digital thermo/hygrometer combo..i see most users use accurite thermo/hygrometers but this is a pic of what i have..

yea one of the employees at petco suggested that i get the analog thermometer and then i found this website and ordered that combo for the price of one analog thermometer.

Right now I have my probe from my Helix taped UNDER the UTH. I set it at 95 and my little Fluker thermo is showing 90 at the substrate surface. So far so good, may need a little tweaking though.

I really like that little zilla thermo-hygro, I may just have to get one! I see a place online that has them for 17.99... that a good price?

well i ordered mine for $14.99 at Reptile Depot check it out theres some nice things there.
