Re: Feeding threw a Syringe?
Anyone who is tube feeding their snake was directed to do so by a qualified herp vet. Why are you planning on tube feeding the snake? Just using a syringe and putting food in a snakes mouth is not proper procedure.

Thanks For thinking i would harm my Snake!!!
I don't plan on ever doing anything that could harm my snake. I just recently talked to a HERP Vet and he gave me some pointers on how to get my snake to eat and he said if it doesn't work to tube feed him. AND SEEING HOW IT IS SUNDAY!!!! VETS CLOSED!!!! So i was just asking to see if anyone else has had to do this and to get some pointers from people who have done this in the past and trying to get an idea of what i will need to buy to tube feed him!!!

Re: Feeding threw a Syringe?
Settle down! Jamie is not trying to be rude to you or say you want to harm your snake. He's trying to caution you that tube feeding without your vet showing you how and talking with you about what to tube feed can be a dangerous thing. If you get liquid food down that snake's glottis you are asking for a dead snake. Snake's can't cough up liquids, especially thicker feeding liquids, from their lungs so it's nothing to mess about with.
If your snake is dying today, find a vet. If not, keep the snake warm and quiet, don't panic and phone your vet first thing in the morning. The vet may choose to do the tube feeding him/herself, many do, preferring that to having their clients that are inexperienced doing a procedure that can be potentially so dangerous or your vet may choose to teach you how...but that's your vet's call, not ours. We can only caution you to seek proper vet advise which is what Jamie did.

Re: Feeding threw a Syringe?
maybe it is just me but the way you posted to Jamie seemed a lil rude.
I don't see where he said you were trying to harm your snake.
He is clearly giving you some great advice.
take it and move on.
However...if you do syringe feed and do not know how to properly do it you will harm you snake.
just sayin'
*I guess it wasn't just me that thinks this.*

First off, take it down a notch. I never said you were trying to harm your snake. It is best to get your snake checked out in person by a qualified herp vet so they can make the determination of whether tube feeding is necessary at this point. The supplies and knowledge to do it can't be found at your local drugstore. If tube feeding is necessary, the vet will provide the proper syringe and tube and will teach you how to do it or give you the option to bring it in to be done if you aren't comfortable. Tube feeding done incorrectly can kill your snake so its best to make sure you are well aware of what you are doing.

Re: Feeding threw a Syringe?
I don't think Jamie implied you were planning on hurting your snake. You gave no information about your snake in your post and asked a question that should be answered by a vet. Since your vet's office is closed today, there is nothing you can do until you get the proper supplies anyway.

Re: Feeding threw a Syringe?
Well i'm sorry Jamie if i sounded rude to you. I am just very worried about my snake, i have had him for over a month and he is just a baby. His spine is V'd and i can feel his ribs!!! and i am scared that he won't make it threw the next week. He has not eatten since i got him! And my other 2 snakes have eatten 3 time since i got them. And i received them 2 weeks after i got him. He is very week he can barely make it to his water bowl!?!?!
So I am sorry Jamie, i just felt as if you were telling me i would harm my snake by just sticking a tube down his throat and pumping full of food.
Sorry to everyone else who thought i was jumping on Jamie too.

Re: Feeding threw a Syringe?
If the snake has a severely V'd spine, I can see why it might not want to eat whole food.
If I were you I would probably wait for the Vet and ask them to show me how to tube feed the snake. I know I wouldn't even want to risk the chance of hurting an already damaged snake by feeding them the wrong way.
I once allowed the guy I bought my newest snake from to force feed her by shoving a mouse down her throat. I was new to the snake world and even then I didn't like watching and allowing him to do that. When I got her home she threw it up. I never will allow force feeding like that again. Complete waste of a good mouse and traumatised Sitka (the snake).
