    Uh Oh Petco!

So i went into petco today to get a small rat for my BP, and i noticed they had a new shipment of BPs in, the normals of course because that's always what they get. I always check them out, see how they're being taken care of, and enjoy looking at them, and as i'm looking in at them, i notice that they're not all the same...and i ask can i see one in perticular and i get it, and even before i asked, i knew right away that it was a pastel BP and they're thinking it is a normal BP. I asked do you guys ever get anything other than the regulars in ( knowing that they don't ) and they said, no all we get in is the regulars. So they have a Pastel Ball Python, selling it for 70 dollars as a regular not knowing what they're doing, and i'm thinking about picking it up and maybe selling it ( only because i have alot of animals and no space for another one ).

It made me laugh, because i applied for a job there mainly because i love animals in general and they didn't hire me, and here they can't even tell the difference, and it's just crazy that they haven't the slightest idea that here they have a snake that runs at a much hire price than the normals.

Do you think i should take advantage of this situation and pick him up? I kind of want to just actually get a setup for him because i've always wanted a pastel, or should i just get him for cheap and sell him? Aren't they usually pretty pricey????

Just curious what everybody thought, i thought it was kind of funny...maybe you had to be there to understand it, i don't know, thought i'd ask you guys/girls.

Pastels aren't as pricey as they were last year. Also, you really shouldn't buy a "Pastel" that isn't proven and sell it as a pastel, that wouldn't be very good. If I were you, I'd buy it..raise it up...breed it...prove it...then sell the babies or sell the original.

I am still kinda new to the whole genetics thing but I thought you only had to "prove" HETs (I think that's what they are called; look like normals but have the gene for possible morphs offspring). If it is actually Pastel then what's more proof then what you see with your eyes?

Not necessarily. It's also possible to have "normal" balls that look different than a regular normal, but the difference isn't genetic. In those cases they will produce normal looking offspring instead of visually different. Remember, the patterns/colors can also be affected by environment, not just genetics.

If it wasn't bred by a Pastel, it could just look like a Pastel. Until it's proven as a Co-dom Pastel genetic trait, it could just be nice normal. I've seen Pastels that look almost normal and Normals that look almost Pastel. Without proven genetics and lineage, it's not a great idea to sell it as such. Just my though.

it's called a "high yellow" normal, although you never know, it could be a pastel ,like everyone said it's gotta be proven, for a possible $400-500 snake that's alot of time and effort to grow it up,breed it,then just get a litter of normals

    Re: Uh Oh Petco!

How do i prove it to be a Pastel?

I'm about 90% postive that it's a Pastel, i do realize Regulars can come in a high yellow and look different, as can different morphs look like others, but this is ( in my opinion ) most definetly a Pastel, and i'd like to get it and raise it, i just don't have the money, however i've wanted a pastel for awhile, and if it is..and get it for 70 dollars because the people at Petco are idiots than i would most definetly sell some things and make it work.

How do i go about seeing if it's an actual pastel?

    Re: Uh Oh Petco!

    Hi,

Well the accurate answer is raise it and breed it to a normal and see what you get just like everyone is saying.

If you want opinions on whether it is a possible pastel I would recomend getting pictures of its pattern and also of its belly pattern and post them up here.

If they think you are serious about buying it ( and if it is a pastel for $70 then you probably should be ) I don't see them having a problem with you taking pictures.

I've seen on other threads however people saying pastels should be available this year from $150 - $300 depending on line and size so bottom line don't buy it expecting to get rich by re-selling it.

But if you can find the room and really like the snake then it could be an intresting dinking project for you finding out if it really is genetic.

Im really interested in the outcome of this! Ive gotten some really amazing animals at petco, but a pastel would be even more exciting. If it is, it wont last long at the store! You can always pick it up, and petco has a 15 day policy where you can bring it back.
