    Regarding flexwatt

Hey guys, I'm a soon to become new BP owner, and I am considering the Flexwatt + Johnson's thermostat. I'm somewhat confused though as to what I need to get. I am looking at the reptilebasics.com website, and I intend on getting the prewired Johnson's thermostat and I think I will be well off with a 4'' flexwatt for a 20 gallon tank (for now, moving to a 40 gallon breeder in the future because I have one laying around). The thing is that I read that there needs to be wiring done, but that can be requested upon check out. Can anyone give me more details as to what I'd be missing? Do I have to buy the wire/clip/insulator set if I'm already getting a prewired Johnson's Control? Sorry for the questions, thanks a bunch

The easiest way is to just call Rich at Reptile Basics and tell him what you are doing and he will hook you up. If trying to do it all via the website. You need to order the pre-wired Johnson, the amount of flex you want and yes the wire/clip/insulator set (this is what hooks the flex to the wire and then to the thermostat)...then in the notes box tell them you want it wired together.

One more thing, if I were to purchase a Ranco or Johnson's prewired, is that all I need if I were to connect it to a UTH? Details details details! Thanks a bunch.

Ugh sorry for the double post, missed the 10 minute mark lol. I meant to ask about the Raw unit, as the one shown on MGReptiles.com. If that was all I needed to use it along with a UTH. Thanks again.

Robin has addressed why I (and many others) don't recommend MGReptiles...but as for you question.

I always bought the raw units and wired them myself . It is only 4 wires and if you have ever wired anything before it is really simple to do.

You can also wire your own Flexwatt as well...but you either need some soldering skills or the flexwatt crimper (other tools might work but you need a lot of pressure to make the crimps work reliably so these are only 2 ways I recommend)

    Re: Regarding flexwatt

So long story short, don't buy it from MGReptiles. Second thing, where can i buy it? basicreptiles (or something like that, i need to look it up again) sounds good then?

Also, if I buy the Raw Unit (wired) i still hvae to wire it? Does that mean i have to buy the wires, or does it just come disassembled?

Thanks for the attention guys. =)

    Close www.reptilebasics.com

The raw unit will have the probe already attached and that is it. You will need to buy some lamp cord - 2 of them (the kind that has a plug on one end and bare wires on the other). One will be used to plug the unit into the wall the other you will cut the plug off and wire it between the unit and the flexwatt.

    Re: Regarding flexwatt

flexwatt, reptile basics or the bean farm

the raw units, don't come with any wires. you'll need a small bit of wire or use some of the cords you cut (extension cord).

a 14 gauge cord will work, 12 gauge at most.

    Re: Regarding flexwatt

So from what you guys are saying, I can't use a UTH with a Johnson or Ranco?

::Edit:: And also, even when I buy a pre-wired from reptilebasics, I still need to do some type of wiring? I lack the confidence of doing it myself haha.
