Enclosure odor

No matter how well and/or often I clean the enclosures, it seems I can't quite get rid of the poo funk. This is an unappetizing problem for me, since all my little ones are in the living room (soon to be xferred into a snake room). It's not knock you down for the count strong, but it's enough to notice when I first come home. If I notice it and I'm in it every day, I can only imagine what it smells like to someone that's not used to it.

I was looking for an odor control product and found a Natural Chemistry, inc. product called Healthy Habitat which is supposed to help with odor control. Does anyone have any experience with this product? Please advise.

I use terra cotta pots as hides..perhaps they are absorbing the smell...

The last thing I want is a guest reflexively gagging when they hit the brick wall of snake poo smell.

Suggestions?

do u use mulch? because I never have a problem..I just pick up the poo and the mulch around it....problem solved.

Nope, I use newspaper or paper towels.

Like I said, it's not knock down drag out stinky mcstinkerson. I think we all have experience with the distinctive snake poo perfume. There's just enough smell to be noticeable if I've been out of the house for a few hours and come back home.

I used to have a similar issue...what I would call a musky-ness smell. At the time I was using newspaper too. Since the cages were in the living area it just didn't work for my wife then I switched to Aspen and we don't smell anything.


Maybe given Aspen a try.

You pegged it, musky. That's exactly what I'm talking about.

I'll try the aspen to see if it helps out.

When I clean my cages I use a product called "Pet Focus" which was designed for cleaning around birds. If something is safe to use for birds, it's safe to use on just about anything, as birds are ridiculously sensitive to fumes. It has a faint clean smell that eventually disappears and you're left with no odor whatsoever. It gets anything off. I swear by it. It's also supposed to be very effective at killing many types of bacteria that some other cleaners wont get. If you have a bird store near you, or can find it online, you might give that a go.

Also, as for the aspen, I find it to make the smell worse, not better. It holds all moisture and just allows everything to sit in the heat, thus producing that funky smell. Just my

I've never had a problem using aspen; especially using sani-chips. It absorbs the odor right up for me. I still think he should give aspen a try.

I use Healthy Habitat because I was having the same problem in my tubs in my rack. The odor seemed to linger even after washing and then using Virosan.
I got the idea from Reptile Basics website as they use it the same way.
I ordered it and have been using it for about a month and it works great for me.

Just a note...I had asked a similar question on this forum some time ago about getting rid of the musky smell. I had several people respond saying to use caution trying to get rid of the all the smell. As Ball's are creatures of habit the "smell" is comforting to them and by getting rid of it or masking it with a non-natural (to them) smell you could run into issues with eating and breeding (where smell is important). The Ball could become stressed due to thinking it is in new place.

Not saying this is happening to you Jotay just relaying what I was told when I asked about scented chemical cleaners.

Healthy Habitat is not a scented chemical cleaner it is all natural cleaner no scents or perfumes. And I would think bm and ur's are not a comforting smell to them as all my bp's get as far away as possible and tend to stick there heads very near a fresh air source.
I would also say that just cleaning the cage and all it's contents on a weekly basis would also discount that theory.
