    Which Carpet Python?

Well I am still kinda stuck on which snake to get, but my funds are growing way faster than I thought.

Its basically between a BCI, or Carpet.

I am pretty sure if it is going to be a carpet, it will be a jungle or Irian Jaya.

Besides size, what are the differences? Are either more docile/better feeders? Also which would cost more on average? I'm still looking for some at a decent price. I'm just afraid of a 20 pound 7 foot BCI. And hoping for a small BCI isn't a good idea which is why I kinda nailed it down to a carpet.

Anyone who knows differences can peep in and show me where to get some

    Thanks

I wouldn't say that either is more docile than the other. They both can become very gentle snakes with some handling. If you are short on space, I would go with an IJ carpet.

Another difference is color. Here are some examples. These are both snakes I produced last year; the first is a male jungle and the second a male IJ.

Personally i would go with the BCI....thats just me though, i LOOOOVE boa constrictors.

Ive handled a full grown female and although she is big and heavy shes really not that bad to handle (of course she is very docile though) Shes what made me decide (and feel very confident )to get my own female BCI. Maybe if you know someone who has a full grown male you could go over and spend some time with him....see how comfortable you feel.

Even when boas are young they are mostly pretty mellow....ive heard from many people that carpets are pretty nippy, some, even into adulthood(this is just what ive heard from other sources, i dont own any carpets)

Male BCI's can get big.....but i dont think most get as thick or heavy as the females

Both species are agressive feeders and almost NEVER turn down a meal.

If you go with a carpet, I'd have to say the IJ is my favorite. That's just a personal preference. I like the shades of brown/purple/yellow they display. Temperament-wise though, there's not much difference.

    Re: Which Carpet Python?

On average, jungles are probably going to cost a bit more, and of course have a bit larger adult size. Other than that, they are pretty similar. Honestly, I think for most people size and price are close enough to the same and hopefully you can just go for whichever one you like the looks of better. As for me, I lean toward the jungle side for looks, so I will post a couple pics below to try and persuade you that way (power to the light side ) Also, purchasing from a breeder that you can stay in contact with and ask lots of questions if/when needed is pretty priceless in my oppinion.

Oh, and in fairness, here is a shot showing 3 juvies; an IJ, a jungle, and a coastal:

aren't carpets more arboreal then boas? so you would kind of need a little taller cage so they can climb right?

    Re: Which Carpet Python?

Ah, Ben, you don't play fair LOL. I too have a preference to good old black and yellows but I have seen some very very nice IJ's that tickle my fancy. I have seen cost generally cheaper on the IJ end compared to Jungles. If money isn't the issue like it started off for you how about a gorgeous Jaguar...what a great display snake. Yes, Carpets like to be aboreal and sit in ambush waiting for something to come by to be eaten. I also say that 2 would be better. I always feed mine on the same day but I wish I would split up to separate days so I don't have to wait to handle them all at once.

Ben, love that pic of all the 3 juvies hanging out. You gotta put me on your list for babies from that striped one, PLEASE! Who would you breed it to?

BUT, if I was to go the BCI route my personal favorite is the closest to all white as possible or other beautiful albinos. Those bright red tails on normal Suri's are just incredible.

Here's one of mine, Bam Bam JCP.

    Re: Which Carpet Python?

Are there sites with Irian Jayas? I saw pythonsinapeartree or whatever from Mpenn, but if Irian Jayas and West Papuans are the same thing, his are more expensive. I did find some IJs for 100 + shipping, and look pretty nice.

Still a hard decision, but what would the measurements be for a full grown IJ cage? Like 28" x 16.5" x 30"?

Anyway thanks for the help so far

You can look around at different CPs in the classifieds-python section of kingsnake: http://market.kingsnake.com/index.php?cat=7

BTW, Irian Jaya CP wins my vote.
