    Might be Adopting

When I move out I might be adopting a full grown Miami Phase corn snake. The owner (same as the one possibly selling me the sugar gliders) wants to find it a new home since he's gotten rid of all his other snakes. He is literally giving it away. It is of good weight and size and the man says it is male. Beautiful snake and lovely temperment. (sp)

I was wondering if he could be kept in a cage this size. I already have newspaper for substrate, heat lamp (bulb not included) and climbing vines (for when I was going to get lizards for the cage). I would have to buy a water dish, 2 hides, thermometers, hydrometer, and cage clamps. Here are the dimensions:

    2' 6" Long
    1' 1" Wide
    2' 1" High

Would that be ok for a fully grown corn snake?

yeah, that would be fine for a full grown corn snake. those are the measurements for roughly a 29g breeder tank 30"Lx12"Dx18"H, which is what I have my 7 year old ghost corn in. As for the heat lamp, I personally dont use those, I use UTH's for my two corns. And you can regulate the temp for those with a thermostat. Have fun with your new aquisitions. If you have any other questions, just post em or send me a PM.

I can't use UTH because all my tanks sit on the ground. I will be getting a snake rack probably this Fall so I'll be getting a thermostat then.

For a tank that size, what wattage of bulb should I use to heat it, since its taller than my other two tanks. My other two are only a little over a foot tall, and this one is 2ft tall. The other two use a 75w infared (sp) bulb.

you could use the same wattage, test it out and see if the temps are within range. if not, you may need to use two bulbs, one at 75 the other at another wattage, depending on which way you need to go in regards to temp. Or put pieces of wood under each end of the tanks to raise them up slightly so that air circulates and use an UTH.

    Re: Might be Adopting

I can't use a UTH because all tanks sit on a carpeted floor. This fall I will be getting a snake rack with belly heat, but until then lamps are the only thing I can use. I will get new bulbs and test them out with temperatures to find the right wattage. Thankyou for the advice.

I personally think that is a little too small. They need more ground room than vertical room, but it may work.

As for not using an UTH, what you can do is to prop your tanks up on some 2x4's. Cut down a 2x4 so that it is the width of your tank, then set your tank on those. Cheap and easy solution. I would advise against a lamp if possible. I think that belly heat works best for corns.

    Re: Might be Adopting

I also would say get a bigger tank if you can. My corn is a bit over three years old, almost four feet, and he's in a 40 gallon breeder and I think he could *still* use more room to roam around. He really uses all of the space to climb and burrow. It's up to you how elaborate you want to get though. I would also suggest a substrate that will allow the snake to dig a bit because they certainly love to, and it will probably end up just trying to hide underneath the newspaper.
