    Ri?

Hey guys. My new female Eve is an 06 I got at a show and she's not eating. (It's been a month, but the vet said she was healthy at that time) I just talked to the guy I bought her from and he says to try rat pups, and I'm going to do that next. Her temps and humidity are set, and she's got the 2 identical hides plus a branch thing to hide under.

My question is... I found some crap in her water bowl that kinda reminded me of mucus. IDK what could have caused it or anything. I did see her yawn 2x the other night, from the side and didn't see any gunk, but I couldn't see straight down her throat or anything. She stays on the warmer side of her tank most of the time and roams a little at night, but does seem to be settling in nicely. What could the crap in the water bowl be?

Also, snakes can't make any sort of noise right? Last weekend we discovered a new noise in my room. My guy thought it was too routine to be an animal (I thought maybe something had fallen down the chimney or something) in distress or anything. He thinks its some kind of machine with dying batteries. It comes from a similar place as where this snake lives, but I just don't know what it is, or how to describe it, but it doesn't interest my cats and dogs... It's been going on for like 10 days now though at least.

When you hold him, do you ever see mucus fall out? A friend of mine tried getting me to deal with his snake with RI and whenever I held it mucus would come out of its' mouth. Your best bet is to get it to the vet and let the vet decide

Oh no, she shows no signs of any issues. I have held her and looked at her face, but I haven't looked down her throat. She's very strong and active, and seems to be doing normal BP stuff... although she does roam her tank for a bit every night, but isn't that 'normal'? Maybe she just 'peed' in her water and that's what I saw? How long does an RI take to develop and how can it happen? I just switched her over to repti bark from carpet maybe 2 weeks ago and that upped her humidity for a couple days, but it's back down to 55% with her temps 80-85/90-95 using an UTH and a ceramic heat source on top of the tank. (and I don't shut it off at night, it's always that warm) I had her checked over by a vet at the beginning of May when I got her, and the vet said she looked remarkable and healthy. She also said it was ok if she didn't eat for a while while I'm trying to get her used to f/t (she lived with a breeder who also breeds food)

I know how this community likes pics, so here's my girl:

    Re: Ri?

My ideas - I have a couple of snakes that only pee in their water bowls...looks like a ball of yellowish snot with some ribbons of it...not sure this is the same for you. If it was mucus then when you picked him up you would surely see it in his mouth since snakes can't cough it up.

Also, if the sound has been going on for 10 days and it loud enough for everyone to hear constantly then you should easily be able to tell if it is the snake or not...as he would be doing it all the time.

I would get him out and just check him out...look for mucus (use a Qtip to look in his mouth) and just listen to his breathing. Any mucus or wheezing and I would get him to the VET ASAP as his RI is very far along.

If not then you really need to figure out what the sound is...it could be some sort of electrical short that is arching and so you don't want a fire.

That is what I was thinking.

I have one bp that will pee in his water bowl EVERYTIME!

    It drives me nuts!

    It is so gross.

    Re: Ri?

I have a box of useless crap over in the same area as Evie that probably holds the answer to the strange noise. I just heard it long enough and am so fixated on this damn snake LOL that I started to worry that I was hearing my snake gasping and not knowing that's what it is. But I really think that if the noise I am hearing was gasping from a snake that I'd be able to see signs of distress in the snake. I just wanted to bounce it off you experts here.

So what kinds of noises can a snake actually make?

That is exactly what hers looked like, ribbons of snot, thank you! THAT makes me feel better. I have a tendency to freak out about things for which there are simple explanations when it comes to these snakes. I think I'm still freaked out by the thought of "playing GOD" and controlling every aspect of their lives, maybe.

When I hold her, I do get to see her face to face and get a pretty good look at her. Like I said, she's definitely strong and acting 'normal' and if that's just pee in her water bowl, then I am feeling quite confident that she's not actually sick. Of course I'll be sure to keep an eye on her.

It seemed off to me that she'd develop an RI one month after being checked out healthy. I'm glad I was just trippin

Now let's all hope and pray that she starts eating soon! I'm going to the guy who had her for the last year to buy frozen rat pups for her. He said that she was eating live rat pups with him, but I'm trying to get her to eat frozen food. Plus I think rats are great pets. I'm a big wuss. (Don't worry for her, I have a few guys that will feed her live if it comes down to that, she won't starve, I just won't be a part of it) I'm concerned about feeding her rat pups for one reason though, and that's that he told me that some of the others he had like Evie were also fasting right now... does this maybe mean that the rat pups are just a shade too big maybe?

I would recommend you stick to live rat pups for the first few feedings and then try to switch her over. Keep in mind she is in a new place, new surroundings, new home, new smells...the last thing she needs is new food...this may be why she isn't eating right now. Give her a chance to settle in and start eating well then attempt to change her over.

What will I do with it if she doesn't eat it, though?

Unfortunately that is the risk with live...depending on how old the pup is it might be able to make it another week before you try again (you would need a small cage, water and food). Or you could take it back to the breeder/store you got it from (not sure if this is doable or not)...or if really young (so it can't attack your snake) you could leave it with her overnight this might make her more comfortable and likely to eat on her own time (I do this with my hatchlings).
