    Balls and Feeders

For those of you who breed your own feeders and keep them in the same room with your snakes (Specifically BP's and Corns) do you find that your snakes tend to be more 'snippy' than they would be if you kept them in seperate rooms?
I'll be back in the dorms agian this coming fall semester, and I would hate to see the temperment of my snakes change because of the constant presence of their food. I'd be changing out the rat's bedding very often also, to keep the smell down. Any thoughts/ideas?

For now I have my snake racks in the same room of my rat and mice rack and I have no problem at all.

    Re: Balls and Feeders

I keep my snakes and mouse breeders in the same room and have never had any problems. I am sure many will say to seperate them, and I would If I had the opportunity, but I dont. I have yet to be bitten by any of my snakes (bp,corn, gopher, garter). I had my corn and bp about 8 months before I brought breeder mice in, and had nothing happen at that point. I am fairly new to the herp world though, so take that in consideration with my opinion.

    Re: Balls and Feeders

Ya, I've been keeping 'herps' in general for about 8 years now that consume the MW and Crix and all of that ( which used to stay in my room until we got a fridge in the garage) and I never noticed anything with them. These are my first snakes though (waaay different hunting behavior) and I was just curious as to what others observations have been.

I keep rats in my "snake room" and haven't had a problem with any of my snakes being snappy. Of course if I don't feed them on feeding day they get a little "angry"...but thats understandable.

    Re: Balls and Feeders

My rats are literally 2 steps from my snake rack. I have no issues with "snappiness" from my snakes. They are conditioned with routines, they know when feeding day is. You DO have to be more vigilant about washing your hands after handling the rats, because it's very easy when working with the rats to look over at the rack and think "I need to clean that tub" and get forgetful (knock on wood, not yet for me! LOL).

Haha, well, what they don't know can't hurt them right?
The handbook says that you're allowed animals thay can stay underwater for more than 10 minutes, so turtles and fish, and we're allowed one 20 gal tank per occupant, but I'm moving in early before our Hall RA's move in, and they don't do room checks. my room is at the very end of the hall this semester, which is out of the RA's hall monitoring rounds, so they never go down to that area of the hall. Besides, it's not like I leave my door open for everyone to see, and the only people who know I have my critters are my really close friends, who are roomed all around me ^^.
My herp vet actually went to the same college as me and he had a pet rat, a cayman (sp?), several BP's and a spider and no one ever found out ^^.

    Re: Balls and Feeders

Haha, yeah...there were so many animals on just our floor alone that weren't allowed...and we live in a 12 story dorm. I had Lilly, and for a bit, Kasi's chamelion. Kasi had her snake, and towards the end, both snakes, and then one girl bought a ferret the last few weeks of school. And of course there was the constant stream of mice and crickets (which kept getting out at first) to feed the critters....Ah...good times.
