breeding as a hobby
Okay, I know that there are large scale breeders that make a living from breeding herps. My question is, how many people just breed on a small scale as a hobby? And who do you sell the offspring too?

I'll be selling lessers, pastels, spiders, mojaves, poss het pieds.
And as for what the pet store is paying for my normals..I'd rather not say.

Re: breeding as a hobby
I bred last year, and ended up with 1.3 poss het pieds. I consider those my 'practice' clutch. the 3 females went to someone who wants pieds but can't afford 100% hets. I sold those to her at basically normal pricing I think. The last male will be sent off to someone else who wants het pied, and again, can't afford a 100% het, and I'm sending it off as a normal(pay for shipping basically).
This year I should have normals and possibly some morphs to sell. I'll advertise online, sell through the network of people I've met, and check in with the local petstore(does reptiles and inverts only).
Since there is no way I'll "make money" this year, I guess I'm a hobbiest, and so far, I only have one clutch in the incubator this year. At some point I'd love to at least break even, and since I breed my own rats right now, it's possible.

Re: breeding as a hobby
I haven't bred yet, but planning my first pairings for this fall. I hope to break even. A little profit would be nice, but I don't expect this to be terribly lucrative...it's just for fun and experience. I intend to produce pastels and pinstripes by next year, and albinos the year after that. At this point, I don't have a plan to sell the normals...if i have to give them away to ensure good homes, that's fine. If I sell them for a little here and there, that's okay too but not essential. I have a domain name registered and am working on a website to market both the normals and the morphs. I also hope to use morphs I have produced in trade for other morphs to improve my collection and diversify the bloodlines.

Re: breeding as a hobby
I breed on a decent scale. Mainly what I produce are AfRocks, Burms, and some hybrids. Who I sell the offspring to, I cannot answer...mainly for the reason that Freakie_Frog stated.
