Toddler Vs. Knife Round one! *ding* DUW

Ok..so I am assuming that when anything happens to your child we all take it to heart..run through our minds saying "should of..." Beating ourselves up over and over again and so on...And I think it hits harder when you are a stay at home mom...really ya have one job...keep your child safe! And then when something happens you really take it hard..or atleast I did. being a stay at home mom and a young one at that I attempt to shatter the mold that young parents suck...things like this really dont help me out lol. But hey..if this is the worst thing to ever happen well then were blessed...but still it sucked big time to get the "where were you?" over and over again by every single person that saw her tiny lil finger I responded "high as a kite at the bar of course!!!" (kidding!!! I was at home with her like always...she is 2...anyone who has a 2 year old knows how quick they move and how little time they need to get into something huge!) So enough yacking...I have a set of those show time knives that chop down trees...cut cars in half and what they forgot to say "slice fingers off children" yeah I know thats standard with all knives...I was getting dinner started and had to use the bathroom (I know how dare I try to crap in peace hu?) And she pulled her chair up to the counter...got her lil hands on a nice sportsman knife out of the block (which was never used so ultra sharp still) and attempted to cut an onion...she missed....

Then her..after the paramedics came..after the 3 hours in the hospital at 11pm we got home..7 stitches later she is smiling lol...stitches are out now...the dates are wrong on the pictures..wasnt really thinking about setting the date/time at that point

this happend 1 month ago..her finger healed well....obviously there is a nice scar...would post the picture of the wound its self but I duh know how family friendly that is
She did well through out it all..didnt cry but yeah I was sent into a heavy shock when I came around the corner..seeing her shaking on her lil chair blood dripping at her feet..her lil blue eyes HUGE...I sat in the chair holding her hand between us and singing to her until the paramedics came (I was to shakin to drive at first..I calmed down and did drive her after a bit if calming down) I've worked in vet hospitals and even hospitals and have seen larger amounts of blood then this and way worse scenes then this...but something about seeing your baby hurt can knock a grown person out...

oh frig you CANNOT blame yourself for that one. it was in the knife block for goodness sake!

i'm so glad to hear she's fine and you lived through it.

I was older, but I've DONE THAT. I wanted a piece of cheese so used the butcher knife to cut a piece off of the longhorn (a huuuuuuuge round of cheddar...about 5# new). It skipped off the top and cut a vein in my finger.


I TOTALLY understand!!!


Now that you know she's energetic and imaginative enough to work it out and to solve problems like that, you can take steps to prevent it happening again.

Sooooooooo glad to hear tho' that the finger's healed up well w/o any complications. Accidents happen. But now you can take preventative steps.

The bad parent is one who lets things like that happen over and over and not do anything about it.

when i was six and my dad was doing some fix-up work on the house I got my hands on his hammer and tried to help him when he wasn't looking. I now have a plastic knuckle... no bueno. i know it's not quite the same, but a memory is a memory. lol.

I'm worried about that one day when I have kids. Not only do I love animals, but I collect knives as well, and in doing so keep them shaving ultra-fine hair sharp. I guess a small safe is gonna be in my future.

Yeah its nuts what kids will get into and that some things you dont see as a problem until something happens to prove other wise...thankfully nothing HUGE happend..needless to say she knives are on top of the fridge and I cant reach them LOL


She is an amazing little girl with 9.75 fingers now LOL no really it isnt that bad..I need to get a picture of it all healed now...

Oh same here...that sadly went out the window when we had her...I was raised around weapons and never even thought about touching them...but it scared the hell out of me when we had our own child with all the horror stories you hear out there now.

And I to was really active and hands on...I never got stitches but do have alot of scars (I'm sure I needed stitches for a few of them lol) I am shocked that she got her first stitches at 2 and I got my first at 20. This can only be a bad sign lol.

I was an outside kid so most of my stuff was stepping on nails...falling from trees...and a couple bad knife accidents....
Brian also had a run in with a knife..he was cutting some lettuce and went to core it..the knife slipped and went right through his thumb (this was 4 years ago) he had to go in for surgery because it sliced the tendon *sp...then do 6 weeks of physical therapy...he still cant use it well..they said they would need to go in and cut the tendon again and have him do another round of therapy...he opted out and is hoping for the best...

It's not too uncommon for me to get comments on my hands. They are not too pretty. I have a plastic knuckle (from a hammer), had the flesh on the outer edge of my palm sewn back on, and plenty of nicks. I have been around knives, and using knives since I was about 6-7 and went fishing for the first time and my dad tried to teach me how to fillet a fish. Now I can fillet a fish in about 30 secs and not miss any precious meat, however this is not the case when your age is represented by a single digit. Your (atleast my) eye-hand coordination does not lend to careful cuts. However, the majority of my little gashes are from using knifes that arn't incredibly sharp. When I do have kids, I am getting a locking safe, and PROPERLY teaching them how to handle and use knives. (and guns , I am a Texan afterall!)

ahhh.... poor girl!i'm surprised she took it so well, most other 2 year olds would scream their heads off! on the bright side, she'll probably remember it for a little while at least....
