Cleaning supplies question.
I've been using Nolvasan for years, but it's gotten REALLY expensive. So now I've picked up a few gallons of Chlorhexidine solution from Valley Vet Supply. (thanks for the URL SatanicIntentions!!!!!) My question is; They are listed as two different chemicals. Nolvasan is Chlorhexidine diacetate and the other is Chlorhexinine Gluconate. So what, if anything is the difference between these two????
Also, the nolvasan has somewhat scary warnings on the labels now, which I swear were't on there when I first started using this stuff years ago. Warnings which now include using long sleeve shirts, rubber gloves and a respirator. The Chlorhexidine Gluconate solution doesn't contain any of these warnings.
The Nolvasan says: DANGER - Corrosive: Causes irreversable eye damage. Wear protective eye wear (goggles face shield or safety glasses) . Harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin or inhaled. May be fatal if inhaled, avoid breathing spray mist. Avoid contact with skin or clothing and do not swallow. Wear rubber gloves when handling or applying.
The Chlorhexidine Gluconate says: Caution: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, ears and mucous membranes. If contact occurs, immediately flush with water.
So, why the big disparity in the warning lables? Is the Chlorhexidine diacetate really that much different then the Cholrhexidine Gluconate?

Re: Cleaning supplies question.
A very basic difference view (if you are looking for a very technical explanation just do an internet search)
Novalsan - is a bacterialcide and virualcide (so it also kills viruses) as such it is mildly toxic (hence the warnings) it is instantly toxic in the eyes but via skin absorption or inhalation it "can" have an affect on the liver.
Chlorohexadine Gluconate - is just a bacterialcide (for gram neg and gram pos bacterial only) and there for is relatively safe. In fact it is often used as a dental rinse and is used in hospitals all the time for mild cleaning.
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. Thats good info. I've been leary about using the nolvasan since I noticed the warning label change.

Yea the federal government required the change after a study in 2005/06 that said in Rabbits it caused liver toxicity. However, if you have been using it (and I know several people on bp.net use it) I wouldn't let the lable change stop you...just be more cautious. The chemical hasn't changed just the label.

Re: Cleaning supplies question.
Thanks, it just seemed like it went from almost no warnings to a rather alarming warning so quickly. I'd been using the nolvasan for probably about 10 years but the price had also gotten really ridiculous.
I was real happy to find the chlorhexidine gluconate because it's less then 1/3 the price of the nolvasan, I'm even happier now to find out that it's safer to use.

Re: Cleaning supplies question.
Interesting stuff Mark and Sean. I use the Nolvosan S. I love the smell that the soap adds. I used Chlorhexidine for a long time. The Nolvasan is really expensive so Ill prob go back to Chlorhexidine at some point or look for another brand.

Re: Cleaning supplies question.
The only major difference is the virus killing capability...if you use Cholorhexadine Gluconate for the day to day cleaning and then something like bleach once a month(for deep cleaning) you will get the same effect but without the potential risk.

The question is then if it causes damage via contact in rabbits what about snakes that are living in contact with it?? (I am guessing a lot of folks who use it don't rinse near well enough)...makes you think.
