BP Forum and General Acronyms
Alrite so I have noticed a lot of acronym's floating around I understood a couple but I was hoping someone could please list all of the main/popular ones for me. Like what does Het mean I noticed that BP's that are "Het" are cheaper why is that? Thank you.

Re: BP Forum and General Acronyms
Het is used when talking about genetics, and usually about recessives like Pied, Clown, Albino, Caramel Albino, Genetic Stripe, Axanthic to name a few.
When you breed a visual of any of the ones above to a normal - all the resulting offspring are going to look like normals. But all of them will carry one copy of the gene, and be considered 100% het for .... whatever the visual was.
In order to produce, say a piebald, you could breed two 100% het piebalds and produce a visual piebald, if both of the hets passed on one copy of the gene.
Here's a good visual explaination: Genetics
Co-doms like pastels are considered the het of their super form. So a pastel would be het for super pastel.
A Yellow belly is het for Ivory
and so on!

Ah, one other question to answer. Hets are not the visual of the morph, so they are more affordable than their visual counter-parts.
Hets are great if you're like me and have more time than money and would love the thrill of one day producing your own clown or pied, etc. You have to be willing to put in the investment of time, feeding, cleaning, etc your het pair to one day be able to pair them up.

Okay so I kind of get it now I looked at that Genetics link and kind of understand it, so basically since its Het if I breed a Het Albino with Het Normal I will get only normals.
Right?

Right?
Almost. If you breed a 100% het albino male, for example - to a normal female, the resulting offspring will be considered 50% possible het albino. So each of the offspring will have a normal appearance and a 50% chance of carrying the albino gene.
You can keep all your female offspring - raise them to breeding age and breed back to dad to try to prove them out (if you get an albino from a 50% possible and a 100% het - you've proven your 50% possible). You can also breed your 50% possible hets to a visual albino to try to prove them out as well.
Oh, and one other thing, normals are not het normal - they're just normals.

Re: BP Forum and General Acronyms
Het is not an acronym. It's short for Heterozygous. It's a term used for the gene pairing at a specific loci. All genes come in pairs. If the pair are identical to each other, they are termed homozygous. If the pair are different from each other, they are termed heterozygous.

you beat me to the punch. This is right on. It's so much easier to say or write Het. Than it is to say or write Heterozygous. And we just say the morph name rather than Homozygous.
The Het. form of a co-dom let say pastel. Is a Pastel, where as the Homozygous form of a co-dominant morph is referred to as a "Super". In this case it would be called a "Super Pastel".
In the case of recessive genes, we'll say albino, the het. form typically looks normal, however that animal carries the gene. The homozygous form of the Albino is of course an Albino.
Other things you will see on here is the 1.2.5 that's male.female.unknown so one male 2 females and 5 unknown.
- Rick
1.1 Pastels - Gunnar and (Ren) short for Renenutet Trust me it's a girl name.
0.1 spider - Anansi
1.3.?? Domestic Rats ....... it changes too much to keep track.
 = and + =

Re: BP Forum and General Acronyms
Alrite Thanks for the info I seem to understand a little bit better, I am not really into breeding or anything, I just wanted to make sure I knew what was going on in case I change my mind in the future. I will be picking up a female sometime soon just not sure if I want an older female or younger one. The one I looked at recently is 2yrs old which is pretty young in terms of how long they live, but just not sure if I want one that is few months old compared to one that is 2 yrs old.
