A few questions. A lot has been on my mind as of late

When you found that one special herp that "spoke to you", what did you do? Did you at the time own any other herps? If so do you still have them? If you did have other herps, did you sell them and pursue on with that one type of herp that "spoke to you"?



Long story short...

I've been fighting with myself recently on the fact that I'm at that point that I'd like to have ALL ball pythons.... but I do like my other snakes as well but none of them "speak to me" like ball pythons do. So do I keep the others I have now just as pets and just start saving up for more ball python in the future, or do I sell the other snakes I have now and just totally pursue in my snake hobby with nothing but ball pythons...

I'm sure this may tick a few off and that is fine since everyone has different views, opinions, and thoughts on these kind of matters. I DO want to hear what you think and have to say! If you'd like to PM me your thoughts and says on this matter PLEASE do so. I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard spot right now on what I should do.

Well that's completely up to you.. I can see nothing wrong with selling off the herps that don't interest you as much as ball pythons.

I think it's better to be honest with yourself about it. You shouldn't have to feel guilty if you'd like to keep all ball pythons. You might be able to make someone else very happy by selling them the herp that "speaks to" them the same way balls speak to you.

I have some that no matter what, they would never be sold but I have others that I can/do sell when I want to get that one special animal.

There is nothing wrong with selling ones that you are not as attached to in order to get the one you really, really want to have.

The way I see it, if they dont "speak" to you then in my mind they won't get as much attention as the ones who do. I see nothing wrong with rehoming/selling them to someone who maybe looking for what you have. At one point I had a burmese, boa, a couple sand boas and a macklots in addition to the ball pythons. a male Ball is what I had first and he will always have a home with me no matter what as well as the macklots b/c she, although not in the plans I have for the future, speaks to me. The others I have found homes for as I wasn't as into them as I was my ball pythons. Nope, I see nothing wrong in what you are thinking, many of us have done it- it is different than the disposable pets we see end up at the shelters.

I don't think there is anything wrong with selling/trading snakes when you loose interest in them or do not need/want them. I just sold one of my bps last week when a female turned out to be a male and I didn't need a normal male.

As you know, I think differently for other animals but snakes it's fine.

i have no problem with rehoming critters. i do it. i've had lots of different ones in the past and have sold/rehomed. i feel blessed to have the time i do with them before they find their new passionate owners.

curious, why is it different with snakes than other animals? is it because snakes don't look at you the same way? don't come to their name?

I'd wager she feels the same way I do...that animals who are strongly social, who can form bonds of attachment, affection, and trust, are owed a much greater commitment than those which are simply content to be left alone.

I have a -huge- issue with people who get cats and dogs and then get rid of them because they can't or won't accept responsibility for the commitment they made. It's incredibly stressing to many of these animals to lose their stable and loving environment.

I have no problem at all with rehoming of non-bonded animals, provided reasonable care is made to ensure they are going to someone who will take good care of them. They don't care where they live, as long as their husbandry needs are met.

I agree, when it comes to a dog, cat and such they form a bond with you that you dont get with herps. I would have no problem rehoming a snake I've had for 5 or 6 years, but if you asked me to give up one of my dogs after that long I'd think you were crazy!

That being said, I have one snake, Slithers (formally Mr Slithers till i found out she was female!) that I'd never get rid of. She's my baby and unless there was some circumstance where I HAD to get rid of her, I wouldnt, ever.
