    hamsters as feeders

Some guy is trading my dad a 3ft BP for a couple tarantulas. The other day he called us up and offered us his 4 breeding hamsters. [1 male, 3 females]

Do hamsters make good feeders? I know they're bigger and fuzzier than mice.. and have bigger teeth than mice. Would it be better to just turn him down and stick with mice?

My dad just doesn't want to buy f/t, anymore. Thinks it's cheaper to breed and let his daughter get attatched to fuzzy critters..

I would stick to mice and rats. I believe that hamsters have small litters and are more agressive than other rodents....also if you BP gets a bite from a hamster, it would do more damage than a mouse/rat would do.

I would not use hamsters as a food item for any snake. They can get very aggressive and will kill the snake. If your dad wants to raise his own mice let him, once he gets a few sniffs of thier smell he will go back to frozen thawed lol.

    Re: hamsters as feeders

Hamsters have longer, harder teeth which, in the long run can hurt you ball...notice I said can, not will....I am just saying it is possible. Also, if you feed hamsters, your ball might imprint onto the hamsters and then he won't eat anything else (what if you change your mind down the road and want to feed rats?) Hamsters are solitary creatures and if you breed them and have a whole bunch, they willeventually fight whereas mice and rats like to live in communities. Keeping a breeding male and female hamster may cause fights. even if the ones you have now get along, they will not live more than a few years and then you will need to start over with new breeders who may not be so nice towards each other.

    Re: hamsters as feeders

If he doesn't want to buy f/t rodents...just have him buy a group of breeder mice or rats. WAY better than hamsters (as has already been pointed out) and in the long run, much easier to breed and keep than hamsters. Just because the hamsters are "free" doesn't make them a good deal.

    Re: hamsters as feeders

I have heard of people using hamsters to get stubborn feeders eating but not as regular meals, i hate the little buggers.
