mold!

hi... I have a dumb question for you guys

my python has a log thing to climb on, which also serves as a hide...
problem is, it wont stop growing mold!!

anyway, my question is.... is it alright to put like a polyurethane finish on it to prevent the mold, or are there some other options? (she loves this thing)

just throw it away and use a plastic hide. it's not worth the hassle and the snake doesn't need anything to climb on. you can use a soldering iron to cut a hole in plastic bowl for next to nothing.

I'd get the log out of there ASAP...mold is not a good thing for ANY living thing to be in a confined space with...it can and will cause major respiratory issues...

In my opinion, wood doesnt belong in a BP's enclosure. With all that humidity and bacteria, it's a perfect breeding ground for nasties.

As stated get it out of there.
But my question is to look at what conditions in the enclosure are causing the mold.
I had a log/hide type thing in my bp's enclosure for over two years and it never once grew mold. What is the humidity in the enclosure?

Also look thru the cage very carefully to make sure there is no other presents of mold any where else.

ok.... the log is GONE.

I'm using a tissue box until i can go out and pick up a bowl

the humidity was a bit high (73%)
took of the lid and drilled more holes in it.
the temps are ok... 80*/90*
and i also changed the substrate.

I'll post again if i have any more probs with it.

they now make plastic logs that are less likely to grow mold, and easily cleaned, just google some combination of "plastic half log cage decoration hide"
