What would you do?
Ok, theoretically...
Let's say you had a group of Het Albino 50% Het Piebald females, and you had a male DH Albino Piebald and a male Piebald, all ready to breed for the first time. Would you breed the Piebald male to the females to prove which ones were true DHs and wait until the next year to breed the DH male to them, or would you take the chance and breed the DH male to the females first?

I'd go with the pied. If you breed the DH, you might end up with a lot of 25%ers and would probably have to sell them as het Albinos. You might hit that 1:16, but business-wise it seems to make more sense in trying to prove out the pieds first.

I'd breed the double het male ... it's not a lock that all of the girls will go 2 years in a row ... keep breeding the ones that produce pieds to the DH in subsequent years and the ones that don't go with the pied male the following year ... if any of those produce pieds, but them back into the DH males breeding group.

Hmm... but wouldn't he also save time by breeding a Pied het albino male from the pied breeding to the other females in subsequent years?

You mean pied possible het albino male ... they'd have to be proven out as well ... there are all kinds of ways you can maximize your production over time ... Initially, I prefer a straight line ... DH male to possible DH females ... period ... 1 in 16 isn't "that bad" ... and if you hit in your first year, it was all worth it ... without knowing the exact size of the group of girls, I couldn't give anything more than a very causual overall opinion.

Ahh... you're right. He'd be back in the same boat with another possible het, although his pieds would most likely be proven. I guess it depends on what his goals were. If he's trying to build more capital, then the pied breeding would make more sense. If he's trying to produce an Albino Pied faster, then the DH would be the way to go.

Well, my assumption would be that if you're shelling out the bucks for possible DH's over het pieds or het albinos (as well as the DH male) than your goal would be to produce Albino Pieds ... At least that's how I work things here ... everything is in seperate breeding groups ... double het groups are only for the goal of making the designer that they are DH for ... pieds would have their very own breeding group ... The other thing I do is to look at all possible hets as likely proving out and then eliminating the ones that don't from the group ... with that outlook (assuming that they are in fact 100% DH's) it makes more sense to me to run the DH male to the girls at least initially.
