Hello all from Pittsburgh! Neebie Ball Python owner

just attended our first western pa reptial show yesterday and been reading and learning for a good while after my wife and i first incountered a ret tail boa at a pet store..

well needless to say yesterday after months of looking and learning about snakes we purchased our lil Dominique!

3 month old ball python, was torn between her or a damsil boa...

got her from Paul at steel city exotics great guy very knowledgable and helpful..

well got her in her new home in our living room have her in a 10 gallon tank for right now..but i have a real nice big terrirum built for her i will post pictures of it in the cage section, still building and decerating it.. I ill have some questions about heating it with flex watt and stuff

but got her sitting nicly in some aspen with a hot and cold hiding shelter, large water bowl and some nice tree vines for her to climb on..

noticed last night she still haddent discovered her hiding spot.. untill this morning curled up nicley tucked away in there...

wife went out to go get a digital thermomter that also read humidity..

and im gonna try a and find a dimmer switch....for the under the tank heat pad....

anyone know where i can get one lowes home deopt wal mart??

Welcome to the forum! And congrats on the new snake.

To answer your question about the dimmer, you should be able to find them at Lowes or HD. I'm not sure about Walmart, but I wouldn't be surprised if they carried them there as well.

It sounds like you're using an unregulated UTH at this point. I'd recommend that you either raise up the tank from the UTH or place enough substrate on the bottom of the cage so that it doesn't get too hot for the snake. Also, you might want to think about getting a thermostat for the long term. Even the most expensive one is a small price to pay for as long as you'll have your new snake.

Good luck, and be sure to post some pics when you get a chance.

The best ones for a tank setup are the proporational. The two most common brands out there are the Herpstat and the Helix. They both run about $120-$130 or so. You can also get a non-proporational one for around $60-$75 such as a Johnson or Ranco. Either way, they're much better than a dimmer especially if you have the tank in a room that might fluctuate more than 5-10 degrees throughout the day. You can get more info at Reptilebasics.com and spyderrobotics.com for the Herpstat.

    Good luck!
