New to forum & herps...quick question
I'm new and thought that I would introduce myself. I find myself in quite a condury ... my boyfriend and I will be moving together soon and he has a few snakes and I've *NEVER* dealt with them outside the occassioanl trips to zoos. I'm not squimish around them, but I've never had to take care of any snakes before either. However, I don't want to look like an idiot in front of my boyfriend ... so I thought that I'd try and do some research before I have to live with them.
Um, I do have one quick question:
One of his females laid a litter of babies in early September and I was wondering, *IF* we chose that path - how soon would it be safe to breed her again? She's a 6yr old ball python and had about 30 babies. Any help would be apperciated. What kind of substartes work best for these lizards?

Welcome to the forum!
To start off, I think you may be a little confused as to what your boyfriend has. Ball Pythons don't have live babies, they will lay a clutch of eggs that need to be incubated for approximately 2 months. The clutch usually has between 4 and 8 eggs, but certainly nowhere near 30. Some common snakes that will produce young in that quantity are Boa Constrictors, Burmese Pythons, Reticulated Pythons, and Anacondas. Of those, Boa Constrictors and Anacondas will have live births, and the other two lay eggs.
Usually with reptiles it's a good idea to give them a full year to recover before trying to breed them again, so they would be able to produce a clutch (or litter) every other year.
As far as substrates, that would depend on what type of snake your boyfriend really has, however most species can do quite will will newspaper, aspen, or cypress mulch.

Welcome aboard :
Others have already pointed out the questions about what species you're actually talking about, so I won't go there.
If your boyfriend has been taking care of them and the two of you are moving in together, then if I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about trying to figure out every little detail. Just watch him and let him teach you. And feel free to browse all these forums....look at pictures and match what you see to the topic of the post and you'll start to learn what the various species look like and how to tell them apart. And along the way, you'll learn all sorts of great tips about how to care for them.
It's all stuff that has to be absorbed over time. There's no short-cut or crash-course in all-things snake-related.

One thing I might add ... having lived with more than a few women in my life, you won't have to worry about this when it comes to snakes ...

Because when you first move in with someone that you've never lived with before, you both end up looking like (or at least feeling like) idiots in front of each other from time to time ... at least until you figure each other out. ... Trust me, you'll know what I mean soon enough.

Re: New to forum & herps...quick question
First off ... thanks for the welcome. But I have to say, while I am sure that you all love your animals and have spent a great deal of time learning about them. I KNOW the species of MY snakes.
The best way I know how to decide if a forum is right for me is subterfuge: pleading ignorance. This way I can get a genuine feel for the site's members and how they treat the oblivious ignorant. In addition to scanning messages already posted from other (established) members.
While I agree whole heartedly that the average royal python has a clutch of 2-10 EGGS, they are also well known not to follow typical patterns and can be VERY atypical creatures.
Secondly ... MY female did in fact lay over 20 eggs, all but 3 eggs viable, hatched a month ago. We have contracted with a pet store in Florida to sell them. They are being cared for by an seasoned reptile breeder and his girlfriend.
You have a nice site layout ... a bit confusing at first. However, at this time I believe that I will not be particapting in this forum.
