Jewel cichlids...

Jewels have got to be some prolific little buggers.......I came into the office this morning to find anywhere from 30-60 fry in the corner of the tank I recently set up.

Was thinking about removing them and placing them in a growout bin, one of the containers that hangs on the inside of the tank, but I've never had this happen with jewels or any other fish for that matter.

Any advice?

well if jewels are anything like convict cichlids (and many other cichlids as well) you definitely don't wanna move their babies... cause they protect them from the other fish. ya, some will get eaten but many will survive... to breed themselves! heehee convicts are known for taking over a tank and breeding like rabbits

if you want to remove the babies... (fry) they need to be moved to a grow out tank of their own. that's how we did it when we were breeding cichlids.

I am pretty sure that they are protective of their young. My friend had some that bred at her store; she did remove the babies to a smaller tank, but it was b/c there were predatory fish in the main tank that were stressing the parents too much.
