    Hets...

So i am ordering a het pied male right now, and a female when i have enough money (hopefully only a few months after the male), as some of you know, and i was looking at the Markus Jayne genetic's diagram. According to this, when you breed to hets with a rec. gene, and have 4 in the clutch (im hoping for more than that), there will be 1 morph, 2 hets, and 1 norm. the hets, they are 100% hets, right? and how would you get a normal if you are breeding 2 100% hets?

    thanks in advance!

    Re: Hets...

that's where 66% comes into play. you will have 2 that are hets, and 1 that is normal, but they all look the same..so you can't tell which is which..you have a 66% chance of proving it out to be a het.

so, the ones that are normal looking are 66% het...some of them are really 100%, but it is safe to say that they are all 66%.
    Am i getting that right?

yep you're on the right track!

Or you can flip the number, and work with 33%...i dunno if that will help you or confuse you....you have a 33% chance of choosing which one is normal.

They're either het or they aren't. The 66% is stated because you can't tell which ones are normal and which ones are het, so there is a 66% chance that one from the clutch is het. Make sense?

So when you prove a 66% het out, you drop the "66% possible" and it becomes a 100% het.

    Re: Hets...

Close. The ones that look normal "could" be hets or "could" be normal.

There is a 66% chance that they are normal looking animals that carry the gene and a 34% chance that they are normal looking animals that do not carry the gene.

It's just the "chance" that they "may" carry the gene.

The only way to know for certain if a normal looking animal actually carries the recessive gene is when an animal displaying the visual trait is bred to either a normal (no het) or an actual het. Any normal looking offspring are guarenteed to carry the gene.

visual x normal will produce 100% hets. All of the offspring will carry the gene.

visual x het could produce visuals but all normal looking animals will be 100% hets.

het x het could produce all normal looking animals that are "possible hets" or all visuals, or a combination of both.

You can look at it this way.
If a normal looking animal is labled as

100% het = guarenteed to carry the recessive gene
66% het = high chance to carry the recessive gene
50% het = 50/50 chance it carries the recessive gene
33% het = 1 in 3 chance it carries the recessive gene

Unless an animal is a 100% het, you are basically taking a gamble that the animal actually carries the recessive gene. The higher the percentage, there is theoretically less risk, but there are still risks and no guarentee that the animal is in fact a het.

Yes. Now you know it is in fact an actual het instead of a "probable" het.

I don't know if you're in the market or not but do be wary of the people selling (33% possible hets). There are a few out there and in my experience they are pretty shady. Most of the decent breeders won't sell anything under 50% but I just wanted to drop this in here.

I am ordering a 100% het. from Adam, with a het especially, i would never order from a breeder that wasnt well known, your het could actually be a normal, or a quoted 100% het. could be a 66% or less het. I dont plan on being stuck in a bind , and i know adam wont put me there.
    thanks all!
