new cage- anyone wanna help me set it up?

so, at work( pet supplies plus) the other day, we got in a All-Glass Aquairum 47 gallon tank, plus stand & flourecent lights( dont need them i think). it was 200$ off, and so i got one, it was $140. i have a few problems tho.

it came with a hood with flourecent lights. but the whole lid is made for fish, not a ball python. i think i should jsut not use the hood at all and make a new lid for it?

the other problem is, it is bow fronted. it has a curve on the front peice of glass. anyone have any suggestions for making a lid for this? i know lids cant be that hard to make, they jsut have to be secure, right?

    also, for the fun part.

how should i set it up?, like a floor plan of the cage. the cage ( rufly measured) is 3 feet long, 1 foot wide, and almost 2 feet high. what kind of lighting am i gonna need? will i need more then one heat pad? is there anyway to take heatpads off and switch them to another cage?
any ideas on how many hide boxes? im thinking i want a large enough water dish for him to get in too. i also really like little shelves, or platforms in snake cages? what kinda things could i make?

hahah sorry for so many questions. pick and choose as you please, these are jsut the things on my mind right now about the cage.

why not use it for fish and set up a $10 rubbermaid for your snake? it'll hold the humidity better, temps will be easier to keep constant and your snake will feel more comfy in a rubbermaid/sterilite than in a glass tank.

that said,... if you wanna use it for a snake... yes you need to replace the lid. i would use melamine myself.

i use ceramic dog dishes for water dishes so the snake can't knock them over.

hide boxes can be made out of many different things or you can buy one from the petstore. it's totally up to you, just make them nice and snug so your snake feels safe in them. having them both identical is a good idea as well.

i have no idea how you would make shelves...

i think you could definitely make it look cool... just remember that you need to be able to get into it and clean - so don't make the shelves permanent as it may be hard to clean if you can't take them out.

    hope my suggestions help ya.

and i put tin foil on my UTH and then duct tape them to the underside of the enclosure - that way i can move them if and when i need to

I know the kind of enclosure your talking about. ive seen them lots of times. I have pretty much the same kind of enclosure set up as everyone else except that i use cage carpet or astro terf i keep 2-3 pieces per enclosure so while one is being cleaned i can put another in. as far as selves go im not sure how you could do that but i bought those bendable branches and drift wood and made almost like a little net my babies can lay on or crawl through and they seem to like it. you know about those selves if you get a piece of wood as wide as one end of the enclosure, and a few smaller pieces you could put selves in a staggered pattern cover the whole thing in say the cage carpet(to cover any rough edges) you could remove it for cleaning.add a few vines etc for security and voila just make ure its well supported so it doesnt tip over. hope that gives you some insight or creative ideas

You need 2, maybe 3 hides for that big of an enclosure. Like recycling goddess said you need the hides to be identical, and snug. For shelves, have you ever seen the exo terra rock background cages? You can buy a custom background and figure out a way to attach shelves to that..I know there are Heat pads that are not adhesive, just not sure of the name. Do a search on google or on here and you will probably find one.... What size snake are you getting?
