So long as you're sure the temps are correct....then yeah, it's normal. They know what they need. And its likely he scoots over to the other one when you're not looking.

What are you monitoring his temps with? Sometimes if you aren't checking the temp inside the warm side hide you aren't aware that the hide is trapping heat and may actually be getting a bit warm for him. Just a thought.

I put holes in my hides just for that reason, Jo.

My ball always likes to move her hides around .....drives me crazy ...lol...But aslong as it stimulates her mind and helps her get smarter.

    Re: behavior with hides...

LOL I have one like that too stangs! Instead of moving from one hide to the other across the tub, she just moves herself and hide when she needs to thermoregulate. I've never been able to actually catch her at it (sneaky snake she is!) but it happens regularily. I check her in the morning and there's the two hides side by side either on the cool or warm side of the tub. Silly thing is they are absolutely identical. You'd think it would just be easier for her to just slither out of one and into the other but nope, she has to move hides to be a happy snake I guess.

I mean heck it's not like she cares about the caresheets! The whole "two identical hides, one on each side" doesn't impress her one bit apparently LOL.

    Re: behavior with hides...

Mine use to live in his cool hide only going in the warm hide after eating or when he was just about to shed.
Now for some reason he no longers uses his cool hide and has opted for hiding behind his hide under a fake silk plant I have in his cage. Nothing has changed in the cage or hide temps etc same as always. Guess he just got bored or seems he likes to really lay more open and oblong then tightly curled up. His current hides are 8"x8"x2". Maybe he needs bigger hides so he can lay out more.
I was always under the impression they liked small tight hides, made them feel more secure.
Oh well he seems happy and content and eats like a champ so I won't stress over it to much.
Anyone else experienced this type of behavior?

My guy likes to lay in behind his hides also, that is when he's not in his hide or soaking!

I dont like hides. If you have a hatchling that will not feed, then a hide may be usefull. they can also contribute to having and keeping a young bp that wants to be a nipper. use of no hides normally means a better acclimated ball python, which is also a more friendly pet.

Really, Ed??? I can't imagine either of my snakes not having hides. They LOVE them. (I realize that's anthropomorphizing....but if a snake ever loved anything, it would be those hides!) I think maybe ball pythons can be kept successfully without hides IF they are in relatively small rack systems that are completely closed in on five out of six sides....then the whole tub acts like one big cave for them. But for 99% of ball python keepers out there...that's not really an option and I believe hides are essential to a "happy" snake.
