    Is it ok?

Would it be OK to keep some pet rats in the same room that my snakes are in (my bedroom) or would it make them constantly be in hunting mode and snappy? They are both fed F/T at the moment.

Thumbs down Re: Is it ok?

I would say bad idea. that rat smell lingers, gets stronger, with heat ; I wouldn't do it. your room is a lot more closed in than a pet store.

A lot of people and pet stores do this. I don't see anything wrong with it. They'll be in hunting 'mode' when they are hungry, not necessarily when they smell food.

    Re: Is it ok?

We have a number of members who keep (or have kept) rats in the same room with their snakes. Of all the ones who have discussed it, they never had any problems with it. I've never heard of anyone having trouble because of it. Just be extra careful to not mix handling rats with handling snakes!

Alice keeps her rat enclosures right next to her snake enclosures. It appears to work for her. Give it a try and if it works out then keep it, but if not then change some things around. Next time someone asks this question, you know from personal experiance why it works or why it doesn't.

I kept all my rats in the same room with all the snakes, with no problems.

Good question, I to was wondering about this. It works for some and doesnt for others, so I figured we would give it a try.

    Re: Is it ok?

I keep 25 rats in the same room as my snakes, and since my snakes eat mice and only know that smell, I have no problems handling the snakes in the same room as the rats. They don't know any different.

But that's only my snakes. I don't know about anyone elses'.

Never had any issues here. Just keep your hands washed between handling animals and of course not a good idea to let your rodents crawl all over you followed by handling reptiles.
