How are you controling the heat output? I know you said these heating pads are on high, but do they ever shut off? Do you even have a idea on what your temps really are? As far as if you switch to using newspapers no your snake will not get burned if you use a Under Tank Heater with a thermostat to control the heat output.I use Exo-terra Under Tank Heaters with a temp controler from www.reptilesupply.com, it the first one under heat control. As far as your humidity is concerned if you spray your snakes enclosure a couple times while he is in shed it will help alot.Or you can place a towel or something over half of the screen lid to help hold the humidity in.If you have any other questions ask away.

Human heat pads are not made for heating reptiles. Like Joe asked, how are you measuring your temps?

He recommended one site, I like http://reptilebasics.com for my heating needs (as another option). Get some proper UTH and a good thermostat as well as a good digital thermometer/hygrometer and you'll have no worries.

    Re: lemme ask ya this...

well i have had my lil ball in a set up where on the hot side where the heating pad that i turn down everynight to med. his statue and the heat lamp a little bit to the side of that ... jungle earth substrate .... his water dish on the cool side along with a snake climbing plant and vines for his cool side shelter... i mist daily and spot clean and after a month completly changing it... and have had him on this type of style for almost a year and he has a real hardy apetite and is quite active after a couple of days after eating and has never struck at me.....not once! when he needs to warm up he goes in his statue esspecially after a meal and spends alot of time on his cool side.... i have a very simular set up for my other ball ... who is in the mists of shedding atm and is as i type hiding on his cool side and goes to his warm side at nights.... but i do have a towel covering half of both tanks to aid in the fight for humidity.... i never used the thermometers or have any way to measure the humidity and havent since i had my lil guy...my big guy was in a way worse enviroment where there was no humidity in place for him all he had was the heat pad for humans and he was comstantly getting out... when i first got him he had a slight wheezing problem which went away after i changed his way of living used a heat lamp and pad moist jungle earth substrate, spot cleaning etc. and he has a hearty apetite and is very active... cept for right now... and has never struck at me either.... i have had him for about 6 weeks.... how would i keep the humidity if i used newspapers instead?

    Re: lemme ask ya this...

First of all get to wal mart and get an acurite indoor/outdoor thermometer that also measures humidity. It costs about $12. Here's a picture.

Then get over to exotic pets Las Vegas. It's on decatur and lake mead. I have been there and another member (Brainman1000) also goes there. They have inexpensive UTH's that you can use as a replacement for the heating pad you are now using and also buy a thermostat. I've found that depending on where I have my water dish the humidity changes slightly, but you're never gonna know for sure if you're humidity is correct unless you have something measuring it. Check out this link on setting up a glass tank setup also, it may help a little. Good luck with your setup.
