Heating

For my baby Royal, I am using a 9 Litre tub, with a heat mat & mat stat.

Ambient temps are only reachhing 75 F at the moment, so I have had to stick my heating on in my flat to get these temps up

If I was to change to a better source of heating, what would I have to get ? Obviously bearing in mind that he is in a 9L tub!

I'm having trouble following the exact situation you have there. Does the warm side get hot enough? But the heat-mat alone isn't keeping the "cool" side warm enough?

If the tub has a lot of floor space (relative to the heat-mat you have attached to it) you may want to consider a second mat to keep the cool side warm.

The mat stat is set at 87F but the temp at the hot end is only reaching 75F.

I dont use the mat for the cool side.. I use it to cover / 1/2 of the underside of the tub.

Shall I cover half of the underside of the tub?

I have a cool house/snake room due to my A/C. What I did was use two UTH's, and set one up with a T-stat (warm side) then, used a dimmer for the cool side (until I can afford a Johnson T-stat). I also had a problem with ambient temps being too low so, I bought a Hermit crab heater (Zoo-med) that is also plugged in to the T-stat. I affixed the Hermit Crab heater on the back of the tub on the "wall". This type heater is OK to use on plastic, but I would still set it up on your thermostat. This set-up has worked out the best for me temp/humidity wise for my 15 qt tub set-up.

You should be aiming for higher temps to begin with. 92F or thereabouts. How is the mat attached to the enclosure? And how much substrate are you trying to heat through?

I was informed that if I had the stat set higher, then there was a risk to the snake as they tend to 'cling' to the mats & get burned.

The mat sits underneath the tub, I am using kitchen roll (3 layers) as substrate

There is certainly a risk of a snake being burned if a mat is not controlled, but setting a t-stat at the right temperature will not burn your snake. Sometimes it feels like walking a tightrope to balance getting the right temps without risking burning our scaley friends....but proper temps are critical to your snake's health and you'll need to get that worked out.

Definatley, I have a mat stat & a strip thermostat on on the bottom of the inside of his tub, the side the heat mat is, to ensure the surface temps dont get too high
