Motown plays a lot around this house. I'm not sure how she's classed but I love that young lady, Joss Stone. Her voice is beyond wonderful and so powerful considering she's only 18. I caught her live performance with Melissa Etheridge (my favorite female singer) on TV and just about fell over. They were doing a Janis Joplin tribute. Not many can keep up with the raw power and feelings that flow from Melissa but Joss can.

joss stone has a great voice. no question.

also i am a huge fan of beth orton, she seems to do a lot of recording inthe u.s to help her folk roots. not so popular in the u,k but if your ladies with great voices then try her on for size.

    her best album was :

    central reservation.

I actually like a lot of the old soul songs; like Diana Ross, Aretha, etc. Though many people I know would not know it! I find myself humming along when, say, these songs are on on Oldies Day at work.
I always liked Madness and there are a LOT of 80s bands I love from your country; The Smiths, etc.
