HOLLY GOD .. what a suprize

WOW, I amagine this. You have a nice cold beer in your hand and you are about to go look at the rewards you have worked so hard on.. I just love watching my rats and mice and their babies. I get such a feeling of accomplishment when i see them all healthy and growing strong. .. So i figure why not go look at them befor i turn out the lights. So i head down to where i keep my rat breeding project. It is in a small room in the basement ... Cold beer in hand and ready to give myself the pat on the back i deserve..

As I swing the door open, much to my suprize, I have an uninvited dinner guest about a 4 foot long black rat snake is peering into the tops of my rat bins. ... Oh did i mention i had my girl friend with me who is now freaking the hell out about that snake getting her rats... I tell her not to worry and go get the camera.. He was not even worried about us. He wanted those rats. He kept striking the tops of the wire.

Man was my heart beating fast too.. Its not every day you open your rat house and see a damn snake thats not yours trying to eat your rats.

I finally calmed her down and proceeded to catch him. I let him go about a mile down the road in the forest. I hope he doesnt come back.

well enjoy the pics, sorry they are not that good i was kind of shaking and the light is not good in the racks.

oh yeah.. when you look at the first picture that is what i saw when i opened the door.. it is at eye level you have to step up to it..
    Chris

Yep plug that hole up, you don't want to become known in the local wild snake population as "Sevo that guy with the free eats" LOL. Plus if it's big enough you might end up with wild small rats or mice sneaking in and that's not good around your colony. Great pics though! We are such odd people. Something freaky happens we don't panic...well we might...but first we run get a camera! LOL

Never, ever underestimate the vital importance of strict and proper quarantine. There is no such thing as being too careful. One mistake can cost a world of damage, and regret that lasts a lifetime.

That's my exact problem with breeding rats. I would love to do it, but choosing one to feed off would be sheer torture for me. I bet I could talk my husband into doing it, though

Re: HOLLY GOD .. what a suprize

Since I've had pet rats and name all our breeders I thought I would have problems Sarah but funny enough I don't (maybe a bit at first and a bit with the fuzzy rats...for me they are the cutest stage). I just spoil the breeders rotten and interact with the feeders as little as possible outside of husbandry needs.

I'll probably end up giving it a try, eventually. The pictures of pups I've seen on here are just so cute, though!
Then again, I had very few problems raising rabbits as a teen...I won't tell ya'll where they ended up!
