    PETA/peta2 Rant

I hope I don't start a flame war with this but I gotta share with other snake-type people.

Monday night I went to see Nine Inch Nails in concert (killer show BTW), and there were the obligatory radio-station and social-group tents along the entry to the venue.

While standing in line to look at overpriced black T-shirts, a young lady came up and asked my group if we had "signed the petion yet?". Her T-shirt said www.peta2.com on it. It took me a few seconds to figure out it was People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals. I asked "what is the petition about" (good english on my part) and was told "to protect animals".

My big issue with PETA is that one of their their eventual goals (according to their spokeswoman/president) is to stop humans from "owning" animals. Essentially, they find "keeping" pets unethical.

I declined to sign the petition "because I have and love pets", this confused the young lady and then asked what kind of pets. My answer was "exotics, including snakes".

She then proclaimed that "people shouldn't be allowed to keep exotic animals". -- That really got me warmed up.

After about 30 seconds of asking her about the things uncovered by Showtime's Bulls---! show (penn and teller) and asking if she supported PETAs method of killing healthy cats and dogs versus putting them up for adoption she explained that killing them was best for them. This really honked off the two dedicated dog/cat resucers in my group.

Not sure if I'm fishing for comments, or just needed to vent.

PETA is a PITA....and that's about as close as I can come in this forum to expressing my opinion about them.

Thanks for posting. In my opinion:

I am a member of PETA. I fully support the "People Eating Tasty Animals" group.

What a crock of ****. If it wasn't for people owning pets, the world would be over run with animals. I've seen the Penn & Teller episode agains PETA...and they're right. so right...i would blow up on someone who asked me to sign a stupid petition like that. Good job on the refusal. And thanks.

edit: Every time i hear "PETA" and something they've done....it makes my tummy go "grrrrrrr i want a steak...a fat juicy steak"

    Re: PETA/peta2 Rant

I once got approached by a PETA person...I told her I couldn't sign it because I keep snakes and feed them live rodents on a weekly basis. She just walked away immediately. It was awesome. Probably doesn't help our cause as keepers to have that kind of attitude, but sometimes you just have to come back at them as tough as they come at you.

Yes, yes and yes to what you guys said. The Penn and Teller expose on PETA is very enlightening.

We're having juicy steak tonight! Mmm!

I'm a big fan of PETA (People for the Eating of Tasty animals) and believe there is a place for all Gods animals.... right next to my mash potatoes. I think that yes people should be held responsable for mistreating the animals they care for. But lets face it 99.999995 % of captive critters have it better than the homeless population in our nation. Most captive animals are provided 3 hots and a cot 365 24/7 and medical care.

    Re: PETA/peta2 Rant

Frankly(oops, not a pun) I do not wish to start a debate on any of the hot topics brought up in this thread so far.
But, caring for people is a totally seperate thing from caring for animals. Not that it is more important or less. Would you have everyone make sure that every human is fed and clothed before they saw to the abused, starving animal in the front yard next door? That is why there are organizations for both.
If an organization is for animals, to say that they should concentrate on helping people is totally wrong. If they wanted to help homeless people then they would be doing that instead.
That said, PETA is a pita, and have way too extreme views. Would they have domestic dogs, domestic cats, domestic cows, etc go extinct by killing them all off? A domestic dog cannot survive as a wild animal. At best it will go feral, resulting in needless suffering on its part until someone has to kill it defending themselves.
I keep pets, to the best of my ability and truely believe that if you cannot take proper care of a animal, exotic or domestic, then you either find it a good home that can take care of it, turn it over to an organization that can find it a home and care for it, or have it humanely euthanized. My feeder rats have better lives than some pet dogs.
Final word from me would be please don't start an abortion debate, nor a religious one.

    Re: PETA/peta2 Rant

Many, many years ago I recall PETA going to a dog show and getting into peoples vehicles and turning all the dogs loose, FOR WHAT, SO THEY COULD DIE ON THE HIGHWAY!!! Claimed crates were cruel. Funny, my dogs consider their crates personal space the same way we feel about our bedrooms. My dogs attempt to open their crates themselves to get IN if I'm too slow.

    Here ya go PETA :cens0r:
